Thunderful Games has announced SteamWorld Build, the next entry in the SteamWorld franchise.

SteamWorld Build makes you the architect of a SteamWorld mining town, responsible for creating houses, food, and entertainment for your growing population. As well as the city building gameplay of titles such as Anno and SimCity, SteamWorld Build will also send you into the mines under the city, as you fight off the local wildlife, and attempt to mine the precious ore that lies in wait.

“When The Station joined Thunderful in 2020 and told us that they wanted to make a city builder, we thought it offered a great opportunity for SteamWorld and Thunderful to move into another new genre,” said SteamWorld franchise director Brjánn Sigurgeirsson. “After losing plenty of hours getting sucked into the amazing gameplay loop they’ve created between overground city-building and underground mining, I can tell you that I’m really proud of what they’ve managed to do within the SteamWorld universe.”

The game has been built from the ground up with both PC gaming and consoles in mind, meaning the UI should work just as well with a controller, as it does with a mouse and keyboard. And it's all wrapped up in the distinctive, colourful art style that the SteamWorld series is known for.

“Having the opportunity to work on an award-winning franchise that’s loved by fans was a real honour for us,” said game producer Adam Vassee. “We’ve put a lot of effort into making sure the game retains the charming character of previous entries, but we’re also lucky in that the SteamWorld series is all about trying new things. That’s been liberating in allowing us to put our own twist on SteamWorld and the city builder genre to craft an intuitive Anno-meets-Dungeon Keeper style system that we think is unlike anything else out there.”

SteamWorld Build is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC later in 2023. You can check out the announcement trailer down below.

  • This is as one would say "right up my alley" :D
  • I like city builders but I'm not a fan of limited resources so I'd like to see more of the mining process and how that affects progress.
  • The art style really looked like a fun kind of game play style. The above and below ground is a nice little twist on things. I will put this in wishlist and follow it and see about it when it releases. But wife and i both like a city builder game.
