Sony has announced that today will see a PS5 system software beta rolling out, introducing a selection of “fan-requested features” for your console, like Discord voice chat and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for displays at 1440p resolution. Various improvements to the PS5 UX, accessibility, and social features are also included.

The beta is available to select participants in the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, and France, with anyone chosen to take part receiving instructions via email. You can get the full lowdown on what's included in the PlayStation 5 system software beta via the PlayStation Blog here, and get an overview in the bulletpoints below.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 stock issues have seemingly been resolved, leading to 7.1 million consoles being shifted during the three months running up to Christmas - a rise of 83% compared to the same period in 2021. A total of 32.1 million PS5s have now been shipped worldwide (30m sold), and it should now be easier to get hold of one.

Should you manage to get hold of a PS5, just be wary that the PlayStation Plus Collection is due to come to an end on 9th May, so add those games to your library while you still can.

  • How about adding freesync premium pro to make the VRR viable for the 40FPS modes, not to mention freesync premium/premium pro is across the board a better, more refined experience than the bog standard HDMI 2.1 standard for VRR. Hence why Microsoft used it, look if your partnered with AMD it's a no brainer to use FreeSync Premium/Pro, but lately it does seem Sony/Playstation is lacking some common sense.
  • What they need to bring back is how you can choose between the PS4 or PS5 version of a game like it was on launch. Having the same game twice on the menu is really dumb
  • @Brawl1994, Actually never have that myself (don't the always ask at the start which version you want to copy/download?), anyway I think you can delete one of those 2 if it bothers you.

OT: Still waiting for those background themes.
  • Of course Discord voice chat only comes to the PS5. Whatever, I expected that to happen. Just another reason for me to finally make the push to get a PS5 this year lol
