Turn-based strategy games aren't a genre that you'd normally associate with the humble console, but Firaxis is looking to change all that with XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Dealing with an alien threat, you're in charge of your own elite XCOM unit, retrieving and researching extra-terrestrial technology, developing your own tactics against your alien antagonists.

We sat down to talk with Firaxis Games' Lead Designer, Jake Solomon to talk all about XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its remit on consoles, as well as multiplayer, design goals and much more.

  • Can't believe were only 2 weeks away from FINALLY getting a reboot of XCOM. XCOM was and still is THE best strategy game of all time in my opinion and can't waait for this!
  • Same, i liked this interview it shows a certain human aspect, i liked what he said at 6:17 "People are hungry for new experiences" Exactly what i have felt about the gaming world lately, that is part of a human function of life is to explore and find something new and out of you're element. It seems like there are barely anymore games besides Bethesda(even if Bethesda messed up on the PS3 platform at least they are trying something new), Thatgamecompany(creator of Flower,Journey,FL0W) and Pixeljunk(Monsters,Eden,Shooters). But knowing that there is an audience out there gives me hope, that they are willing to try something new regardless of being use to a certain style of game, and will purchase XCOM October 9th.
  • Ashame it's a Turn-based strategy game not a real time strategy game, i don't think this will do that well with some of the best games coming out around the same time. I am all for new types of games but come on Turn-based strategy game, at least do a real time strategy game we are in the year 2012 not the 1990's.
  • @#3 i see you're point, i love real time strategy as well, but all in all we should support all strategy games in general at least the ones that are interesting, i mean think about it, if this game get's the support it deserves who is to say that a real time strategy game will not be in the future. I usually hate turn based, but you have to admit the variations of combat are interesting, and there is some real time strategy in the base of the game where you tell you're scientists to study for things etc.
  • I want my strategy games turn-based, and I'm happy this game is not ruined and aimed for Call of Duty crowd. We already have plenty of brainless reaction-test real-time "strategy" games. Now, when XCom is released, we at last have ONE good turn-based strategy game for PS3. This game is the best thing that has happened for console gaming for ages.
  • @1 and the hardest :P.
  • Jake Solomon. You are the man @1 totally agree with you on that. 12 days till release. I need a 12 day hobby!! Xcom original I here you calling my name.
  • I prefer turn based - if only because that form of strategy doesn't measure reaction time but the understanding of the game's mechanics.
