Take-Two's Private Division publishing label is teaming up with New Zealand-based Lord of the Rings movie effects house Weta Workshop for a new Middle-earth game. A tweet from the official Private Division Twitter account announced the collaboration, which will see the development of a new project set within J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic fantasy universe.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we have partnered with Weta Workshop to publish a new game set in the literary Middle-earth universe of J.R.R. Tolkien,” the tweet from Private Division proclaims. “We look forward to sharing more about the project in the future!”

Weta Workshop (which established its own game studio back in 2014) itself will be spearheading development on the Middle-earth game, although the project is in its early phases, and tentatively scheduled for release “during Take-Two's fiscal year 2024”. A licensing deal with Middle-earth Enterprises will provide Weta with “the broadest creative license to interpret the underlying lore of the books,” Private Division stated.

Previously, Weta Workshop helped bring to life Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, as well as the director's 2005 remake of King Kong. It's currently working on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon Prime's super-expensive spin-off TV series, set during the Second Age, prior to the events of The Lord of the Rings.

Next up for Middle-earth video game shenanigans, meanwhile, will be The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was recently pushed out of its September release window, and has yet to be given a new launch date. You can take a look at some Gollum gameplay here.

  • The word “interpret” sets off a lot of alarm bells for me. We have seen how badly that has worked for rings of power.

Don’t “interpret”, just bring what Tolkien himself wrote and put it onto the screen and change as little as possible.
  • We're not going to "change" anything, but we will "interpret" everything...
  • Hopefully they do a game in the 2nd or 1st Ages if they have the book rights. The 3rd Age has been done to death at this point
  • Could be interesting like the last Mordor games or very mediocre like the new Gollum game is looking.
  • Why don’t they let Monolith do the game since they did the last 2 Middle Earth games. Shadow of Mordor & Shadow of War & they were both amazing. Not to mention the Nemesis system was such an amazing feature
