Overwatch 2 Will Replace Overwatch When it Launches in Early Access

Overwatch 2 Will Replace Overwatch When it Launches in Early Access

Overwatch's currently multiplayer will be succeeded by Overwatch 2 when it launches in early access this October.

Since Overwatch 2 was first announced back in 2019, it was revealed that Overwatch and Overwatch 2 players would compete alongside each other in multiplayer, suggesting that any changes made in Overwatch 2 would be transferred to the original Overwatch as well.

However, with Overwatch 2 launching in early access later this year, it was unclear if it would immediately replace the current Overwatch metagame, or whether the two would exist as separate titles alongside each other until Overwatch 2 fully launched.

Now, thanks to a Reddit AMA, we have the answer, with game director Aaron Keller answering that very question.

“We’re using the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the start of many new things coming to the game,” said Keller. !We’re launching with new heroes, maps and features, but there are even more of these coming seasonally – every 9 weeks. We recently released a roadmap detailing some of this content, with a new hero coming in Seasons 1 and 2, and a new map in Season 2. Additionally, larger pieces of the game that have always been a part of the vision for OW2 will be released to the game as part of the live service, including the launch of the PvE Campaign next year.!

“When OW2 launches on Oct 4th it will be a replacement for the current Live Service.”

So, it seems that fans of the current version of Overwatch will either need to adapt or move on when Overwatch 2 launches in early access. The launch of the new game is bringing some big changes to the multiplayer, moving from 6v6 to 5v5, and reducing the number of tanks in each team to just one.

Overwatch 2 is launching as a free-to-play game in early access on 4th October 2022.

  • Funny they didn't mention if anything you paid for will carry over(unless I missed it) so kiss that goodbye. Also idgaf what THEY call early access. Always meant that it's incomplete. Plain and simple and that you are gaining " early access" to a game that is still in development.
  • So all of those discs for Overwatch will just become coasters?
  • i'm confused a little here, does this mean the first overwatch severs will be going down when OV2 launches?
  • Overwatch 2 is not a sequel but a rework of the current game. It's basically Overwatch 2.0.
It was terribly communicated and still is. They are causing a lot of needless confusion.
  • Them still calling it Overwatch 2 is pretty dumb. They should've just given OW1 a massive big overhaul/update and new characters and that's it. Weird move.
