Codemasters has outlined how EA Sports F1 22 will be utilising the features of PS5's DualSense controller to create “an incredibly authentic racing experience”.
Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, senior game designer Steve Embling broke down how EA Sports F1 22 would be taking advantage of the DualSense. Haptic feedback is being used to enhance the feeling of road surfaces and collisions, with a level of detail that lets players feel individual chunks of surface debris.
“Most notably, the sensation can be localized to the left or right,” said Embling. “A great example of this is when just the left wheels of the player’s car are driven aggressively over a kerb, the feedback is felt exclusively through the left side of the controller, adding to the realism.”
The DualSense controller speaker is also used, with the sounds of the driver's race engineer coming through the speaker. Finally, the adaptive triggers are able to adjust the resistance based on the slip ratios of the tires. The brake trigger will offer increased resistance when the car ‘locks up’ under breaking, while wheelspin will see the resistance on the accelerator trigger increased.
“A subtle difference to the resting resistance of the accelerator and brake triggers has also been applied to simulate the difference in pressure needed to fully depress the brake vs accelerator pedals in a real-life F1 car,” said Embling.
Ea Sports F1 22 launches on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on 1st July 2022.
