Sonic Frontiers is scheduled to launch later this year, and despite a call from fans to delay the game, based upon the gameplay footage shown thus far, developer Sonic Team has declared that it has no plans to put the game on hold. Taking the blue blur into open world territory, the new game promises to be a “massive leap forward” for the Sonic.
Adopting what Sonic Team studio head Takashi Iizuka dubs an “open zone” format, Sonic Frontiers is set amid the Starfall Islands, with vast expanses of green grass, interspersed with ancient stone structures. According to Iizuka (in an interview with VGC), playtesting of Sonic Frontiers with the game's target audience has been positive, and he's confident that once fans have the chance to play it, they'll change their tune.
“Frontiers is in development now, and actually we’ve been doing a lot of playtesting with our target audience, who would be in that demographic of someone who’d play a Sonic game and enjoy it," Iizuka remarked. “So we do feel that we’re getting to the point where this game is done, and people will like it, and we do want to get that game into our fans’ hands as soon as possible.”
Sonic Frontiers will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in holiday 2022. You can take a look at some new gameplay footage, with some chatter from Dan and myself, below.
