The Callisto Protocol Has Ditched its PUBG Connection

The Callisto Protocol no longer takes place within the PUBG universe, creator Glen Schofield has revealed.

When The Callisto Protocol was first announced as a kind of spiritual successor to Dead Space, it was also revealed that it would take place within the universe of battle royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, just set 300 years in the future. While this seemed a bit bizarre at first, it wasn't a huge surprise, with Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol creator Glen Schofield having joined PUBG Corp back in 2019 to work on a “brand new and original narrative based game” within the PUBG universe.

However, Schofield has now revealed that The Callisto Protocol will take place within “its own story and world”.

“It no longer takes place in the PUBG Universe,” said Schofield on Twitter. “It was originally part of the PUBG timeline, but grew into its own world. PUBG is awesome, and we will still have little surprises for fans, but The Callisto Protocol is its own world, story and universe.”

Schofield elaborated further on this change in an interview with Game Informer

“The idea of us being in the [PUBG] universe at first sound really good, and then as you start coming up with your story we realized, ‘Wow, this is a little out there.’ We built in some touchpoints, and you’ll find them throughout the game like Easter eggs and things like that.”

So, while The Callisto Protocol will no longer sit canonically within the PUBG timeline, we should still expect to find some fun references and Easter eggs throughout the sci-fi horror game.

The Callisto Protocol is due to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2022.
