SEGA Planning 'Significant Increase' in Remakes and Remasters for 2022-23

SEGA has declared that it's planning on releasing a “significant” number of titles over the course of the ensuing year, with a range of remakes and remasters of classic games apparently in the pipeline, for release before the end of March 2023.

During a financial presentation detailing its results for the fiscal year ending March 2022, SEGA parent company SEGA Sammy reported robust sales of its console and PC titles, with increased profits compared to the previous year, and an even stronger forecast predicted for financial year 2023 (via VGC).

A “significant increase in titles” for the current financial year, including “remake / remaster, spin-off [or] change of theme," are among SEGA's plans, building upon the success of games that fall into that category, like Sonic Colours Ultimate and Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania.

Alongside Yakuza spin-off, Lost Judgment, SEGA apparently sold around 4 million copies of games considered remake/remaster, spin-off, or “change of theme”, and the company is forecasting sales of approximately 5 million units for games within this category during FY2023, including Sonic Origins, which is set for release on 23rd June.

With reboots of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio reportedly in the works, it seems that SEGA is doubling down on classic IP, although neither of those two titles will be launching in 2022/23. They will, however, form part of SEGA's ‘Super Game’ strategy, which encompasses "the development of AAA titles that cross over SEGA's comprehensive range of technologies," according to SEGA EVP Shuji Utsumi.

Which classic SEGA titles would you like to see making a comeback? New Billy Hatcher, anyone? Shinobi? Kid Chameleon?

  • Golden axe, mega bomberman & streets of rage please
  • Shining Force please!
  • @Raggle101 - Hell YES!
  • How?!
Pretty much all I know of SEGA right now are remasters, remakes, and rehashes of old games. If it wasn't for Total War and Yakuza/Judgement I wouldn't even know any recent new games.
  • Skies of Arcadia
  • How about a new Columns? I used to love that game.
  • Bring back Streets of Rage 1-3, Golden Axe 1-3 & Space Harrier 1 & 2
  • Sonic Heroes please.
  • Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Spinball, 3D Blast (Saturn version) and Mean Bean Machine using the Mania version of it as an extra please. Call it a second part of Sonic Origins.
  • New games please, not remasters and remakes of ones that have been ported a million times already.
  • I don't think it's remakes or remasters SEGA need, they just need to bring back old IPs with either new games or reboots. Golden Axe would be a good one to bring back after the so-so attempt that was Golden Axe: Beast Rider, it had potential, but fell flat.
  • @terminator Knuckles Chaotix and the Saturn version of 3D have actually NEVER been rereleased/remade, they are still bound to illegal emulation or the original devices, so those two are definitely valid options
  • Golden Axe Revenge Of Death Adder please!
