Developer Crystal Dynamics has today confirmed that it's commenced development on the next entry in the Tomb Raider series, following up 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The next Tomb Raider will use Unreal Engine 5, the studio announced during Epic's State of Unreal event.

"We are thrilled to announce today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game, powered by Unreal Engine 5," Crystal Dynamics confirmed. “Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and deliver the high quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise”.

Of course, it's early days for Lara Croft's next outing, but at least we now know that Tomb Raider will be returning at long last in a few years' time, built using Unreal Engine 5, as demonstrated to great effect in Epic's The Matrix Awakens teaser demo. And now, we wait…

  • Nice, let's hope they can make something original again. The reboot was really great, but Rise and Shadow just felt like DLC.
  • Looking forward to it. The first one was my fav and while I kinda liked the 2nd and 3rd, the story in the latter two was the weakest point imo (esp 3rd). Maybe they wanted a new enemy for every game but I wish they continued the story of Himiko, Sam and Mathias from the comics. I don't know why the devs choose to do this - finish the plot in a comic. Assassin's Creed got the same treatment. They ended the story of Juno and Desmond's son in a comic.
  • First one was best but the puzzles and exploration in shadow was the most tomb raider this reboot series has been imo
  • Great gaming news. Looking forwared to the next TR game.
  • So is this the new trend now; announcing games the moment they start working on them. Also noticed its studios that have been catching a lot of flack lately for their games being sub-parr. Crystal Dynamics with the Avenger game and Cyberpunk for CD Projekt Red.
  • I like the first reboot game and I actually enjoyed Shadow too. Didn't like Rise that much.
Here's hoping they can make the new one enjoyable like the others at least.
  • @Maxstuff, It's probably to keep the shareholders satisfied that new stuff is coming out that they haven't ruined yet.
  • I honestly prefer the old tomb raider games way more. Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3 and 4 were incredible. I remember using the Tomb Raider Level Editor to create some levels too. Ahh those were the days!
  • Love tomb raider so I'm hoping this is will be on ps4 as well as ps5 as I still can't get a ps5 anywhere yet
  • @AntTheTitch, By the time they finished with this you probably will.
