Sony has officially announced what's been reported as ‘Project Spartacus’ and a competitor to Xbox Game Pass, and it's called… PlayStation Plus. However, this is an “all-new” PlayStation Plus due to launch this June, offering three different subscription tiers, with PlayStation Plus essentials offering the same old PS Plus benefits at the same price.
The major change since PS Plus first launched in 2010, is the addition of PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium tiers, offering access to over 700 games (including PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP titles, as rumoured) with the highest ‘Premium’ tier, and 400 PS4 and PS5 titles with the lower ‘Extra’ tier. In short, it folds in PlayStation Now, rather than offering a library of games as a separate service.
“Our focus is on providing high-quality, curated content with a diverse portfolio of games,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan writes on the PlayStation Blog, sharing details and pricing for the three PlayStation Plus subscription tiers, as follows:
PlayStation Plus Essential
PlayStation Plus Extra
PlayStation Plus Premium**
“The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, our key focus is to ensure that the hundreds of games we offer will include the best quality content that sets us apart,” Ryan added. “At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal.
“We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed. More details to come on the games we’ll have on our new PlayStation Plus service.”
PlayStation Now users will be able to migrate their subscription to PlayStation Plus Premium at launch with no change to the current fee, when it launches in June to select markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe, and other territories around the world.
“We aim to have most PlayStation Network territories live with our new PlayStation Plus game subscription service by the end of the first half of 2022,” Ryan assures. “We also plan to expand our cloud streaming benefit to additional markets, and will provide more details at a later date.”
The all-new PlayStation Plus will be rolling out from June 2022.
