As Nintendo's Paper Mario series continues to move away from its RPG roots, it seems that indie developers are stepping up to fill in the void. First we had Bug Fables, and now we have The Outbound Ghost, which was announced during the Future Games Show Spring Showcase last night.

Inspired by games like Paper Mario and Undertale, The Outbound Ghost is a story-driven adventure that sees players taking control of a ghost with no memory of who they were, or how they died. In the haunted village of Outbound, you'll meet a selection of spectral residents who you'll have to help pass to the other side.

Combat is turn-based, and you'll be able to recruit figments of your past personality - such as Regret, Benevolence, and Jealousy - as party members to help you in battle. Crafting materials won in battles can then be used to make badges, which can be equipped to boost your stats.

“The aim is to create a compelling story that seamlessly integrates with original gameplay. That's something I've prioritized since day one. We still have work to do, but I'm already very happy with the narrative design,” says project lead Conrad Grindheim. “I don't want to elaborate and give too much away, but there are multiple 'paradigm shifts' in the game that I hope will make for unforgettable story beats.”

The Outbound Ghost is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Q4 2022. You can check out the announcement trailer, as well as a developer diary, down below.
