The Witcher 4 Teased By CD Projekt as The Beginning of "A New Saga"

CD Projekt has announced the next game in The Witcher series, which will be developed using Unreal Engine 5.

The first new single-player AAA RPG in The Witcher series since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched in 2015, this new title is being teased with the tagline “A New Saga Begins”. Could this mean we're playing as another protagonist aside from Geralt? Perhaps players will take on the role of Ciri, as plenty of fans have hypothesised in the past?

No further details, including release dates or development time frames, have been announced, but the announcement appears to have arrived alongside the announcement of a long-term collaboration between CD Projekt and Epic Games. While previous games in The Witcher franchise were developed using the studio's in-house REDengine, The Witcher 4 (or whatever it ends up being called) will utilise Epic's Unreal Engine 5.

“One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 Transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our cooperation with Epic Games is based on this principle,” says CD Projekt CTO Pawel Zawodny. “From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership.”

“It is vital for CD Projekt Red to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as, in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools. I can’t wait for the great games we’re going to create using Unreal Engine 5!”

CD Projekt did confirm that REDengine would still be used in the development of Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming expansion.

So, are you excited for a new The Witcher game? We may only have an image and a tagline to go on, but let us know your theories in the comments down below.

  • Looking forward to getting this summer of 2030.
  • I was just thinking of the Witcher the other day. Im sure it will be a new character but hopefully worth the wait.
  • My insane level of love for 'The Witcher 3' has me excited. The fetid turd that is 'Cyberpunk 2077' has me very worried.
  • Coming soon once the PS7 releases (and no one will be able to get a PS5 still by then)
  • It will be woke, and buggier than Cyberpunk at launch.

It will probably be Ciri, as the main character.

What they need to do is let you develop your own Witcher, pick your School (with associated skill tree, preferred weapon set, etc.).

  • So much "excitement" because they use another engine now ... and development has apparently not even started. With their track record the PS7 statement above might actually be wishful thinking. :D
  • Agreed dreadnaught_
  • @c1ned1ne I like to be optimistic with my pessimism lol
  • Can't wait for my refund
  • They can keep it, im done with CDPR and there lies

I think you may be right.

The team that made Witcher 3 (and 1 and 2, for that matter, which I didn't get to play) doesn't exist any more.

If you liked Witcher 3, probably the best thing is to just play Witcher 3 again. I probably have 200 hours in that game, and I still am finding new things.

The best is to play Witcher 3 and read all the books while doing so. That was bar none the best fantasy / video game experience I've ever had ...
  • CDPR gives release date for new Witcher.
Fans: you sure bud? ‘Member last game?
    CDPR changes date to TBD
  • Hopefully it will be with Geralt
  • As much as I'd like Geralt to be the protagonist, I've read many articles online that suggest Ciri will be the one to continue the series. I think CDPR probably feel the Geralt saga is over, he was old in W3 and Ciri is more powerful anyway. Hopefully she can be the hero for this game and maybe Geralt can be a playable side character that supports her?
  • Don't really want Ciri as a protagonist. Stick to Geralt or let us create our own Witcher.
  • I see certain people complaining about woke again to no one surprise.
