Netflix, 2K Games, and Take-Two have joined forces for a new BioShock movie, with The LEGO Movie company Vertigo Entertainment on board as producers. Like almost every blockbuster IP, the hope is that BioShock will become a “potential cinematic universe”.

Back in 2008, Universal Pictures took a stab at a BioShock flick, before the project fell apart. That version would have been helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, and this new adaptation has yet to be given a director. In fact, details are fairly scant, at present, as per The Hollywood Reporter's article and the Netflix Geeked Twitter account.

Presumably, the film will take the first two game's Rapture setting as its jumping-off point, with possible “cinematic universe plans” taking the series to BioShock Infinite's Columbia. In video game world, meanwhile, a new BioShock is in development at new studio Cloud Chamber, rumoured to be set in Antarctica during the 1960s.

  • It will not be good.
  • This has potential, but I've got concerns. Don't try to make it an action movie. Focus more on the stories, characters, environment and atmosphere. Then it might work.
  • Tom Holland, stay away!
  • Could be good if done as a full animated deal, live action..., likely to be shite.
  • Should have been a series
  • @Raggle101 - agreed. A TV adaptation would be better
  • Id be more excited about this as a TV show than a movie. As a movie Im pretty much expecting crap.
  • BioShock revolves around different social philosophies and what happens if you push them to the extreme or corrupt them by excercising control. The games have 8+ hours trying to explain that to you, mostly via long audio messages. In the first one you later have a Shamalayan twist that makes you reflect on the whole experience.
No way to put that into a watchable movie. I doubt it would even create enough interest for a series.

But hey, it's Netflix. So no chance in hell I could ever watch this.

Why does everything nowadays need to be an epic, a saga, a cinematic universe, and a spectacle. I just want to have an enjoyable simply good flicks I can watch on a rainy afternoon.
Fuck Bioshock. Make a movie out of Kena. Or Knack. Ni No Kuni. Make a silly action comedy out of Saints Row or Agents of Mayhem. Make a movie out of some of the great LucasArts Adventures or Deponia. So many great that lend themselves perfectly to movies without having to stretch it or have some multi-layered deeper meaning that you superficially scratch on while turning it into an uninspried action movie.
  • They could make an awesome trilogy out of the first Bioshock, Infinite and Burial At Sea. But would def work better as a serial.

As long as it's live action, animated would be very dumb.
  • Listen guys have you forgotten NETFLIX's League of Legends: ARCANE... I mean the game is meh in my opinion, was never a fan of it especially if you compare it to BIOSHOCK... all i needs is a good writers who know how to make a good back-story for the characters (Christian Linke and Alex Yee for Netflix perhaps) - in the case of the Bioshock universe the back story is already there, just need the perfect character developers in charge. I hope it would be more on an animated feature though - but more on the caliber of French animators Fortiche. Then make sure the OST is great as well.

It has the potential as Arcane had shown us... lots of fans who are not even playing or have known anything about League of Legends is a testament of that...

I think it would be better to make it as a TV series... but as a 2-3 hour live action movie? This is going to be risky...

... imagine casting Asian or Black actors for a major characters that were NOT originally of 'THAT' ethnicity... I mean ROSE of Star Wars (Ep -7-9) is an original character but for whatever reason gatekeeping Star Wars fans say, they still hated her regardless - not just her story character, these sort of people hated her as a person - stupid and crazy world we live in eh, hating just for the sake of hating...

Caitlin of LOL in the very successful NETFLIX animated feature was also made (kinda) mixed race who looked more East Asian (her father was and her mum looks European, so she's mixed ethnicity) and some LOL game fans HATED it and questioned WHY she looked that way (heated discussion on a thread in Reddit). However the fans of the Netflix series don't give a rat's ass about this shift simply because her character has been developed and presented very well... and quite frankly who cares right?

So yeah let's not shoot this project down yet and JINX it (see what I did there?) even before it has even started... in any case, if some hardcore fans hate whatever the outcome is - they simply don't have to watch it, simples.

The Bioshock game that the 'gaming fans' love won't be affected by this move anyway if it fails, will it? It could also be a springboard for a new Bioshock game in the future with the backstory of new characters explained in detail with the movies and/or TV series - no need to explain all that stuff in-game as what Ned above had mentioned, 8-hours explaining stuff in-game.
  • Netflix exists solely to ruin every single book and video game franchise that I am passionate about.
  • @Naps Do you own stock in Netflix or something?
  • Please no famous actors and please especially not people like The Rock or Holland. Please.
  • Since Netflix is behind this, this quote from Andrew Ran himself is very apt...

“An artist strives to frame his ideals in an image; to challenge his audience and to make his vision immortal. But the parasites say ‘NO! Your art must serve the cause…”
  • @dreadnaught_, So just don't watch it, problem solved. Pretty dumb to let a streaming service have such a big influence on your personal life.
  • @ Unger ... You are a sanctimonious, lecturing twat. Learn to fucking read.

Nobody said ANYTHING about any about streaming service "influencing my personal life."

Everything Netflix touches, they ruin. They change the plot and turn it into woke garbage. This is fact.

I have never paid them a dime. It is unfortunate that they are licensing the best properties with the best potential, but changing the aspects that made them great.

But you're probably too much of a simpleton to have even touched the Witcher books to understand what great pains CDPR took to remain true to the source material in continuing the story with their games, and how Netflix did nothing of the sort. You're probably too thrilled to see tits, quite honestly.
