Mortal Kombat 12 Teased by NetherRealm

NetherRealm Studio's Jonathan Anderson appears to have “accidentally” revealed the existence of Mortal Kombat 12 (and possibly its announcement trailer) on Twitter.

Anderson posted a photo on Twitter of marketing material and concept art from Mortal Kombat and Injustice, before quickly taking it down only a few minutes later. Of course, the Mortal Kombat subreddit picked it up pretty quickly, and found a few references to Mortal Kombat 12 on Anderson's monitor in the background.

One file appears to be listed as “MK12_Master”, while a short glimpse at an email on the screen gives us the following snippets from a paragraph.

“Do not” … “share any part of this video, nor any” … “our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace” … “take extra care with this material”.

Now, in reality, its exceptionally unlikely that this was an accidental leak. NetherRealm has a history with teasing its upcoming announcements, and its likely that this leak is completely intentional, ahead of a full reveal in the near future. Perhaps in the rumoured PlayStation State of Play next month? Or maybe this is the first tease in a breadcrumb trail leading up to E3 or Summer Game Fest? Hopefully, we'll be seeing the next Mortal Kombat game sooner rather than later.

  • Shame, would've preferred Injustice 3 or maybe even a new IP.
  • This could just mean they are close to done with their latest project and are starting work on MK12...

So like if the rumored Marvel game is at a point where it just needs polish and tightening up, they can have a second team complete it and the first team get to work on their next game.

AAA Game Devs don't work on one game at a time, the studio usually has 2-3 projects in the making. Games take years to design and create so to keep them coming out they cant just work on one, release it, fix the bugs then work on a new one for two years.

MK11 was being worked on while Injustice 2 wasn't even out yet.
  • It should be Injustice 3, not MK12. They seem to do an "every other" release schedule now.
  • I rather have Injustice 3 with ongoing DLC instead of a new game every few years.
  • What is it going to take to get a Marvel vs DC fighting game? The game would have massive potential and could last years with the size of both rosters and the opportunities for DLC would be almost endless. Not to mention it would sell like hot cakes. Make it happen, Ed!
  • @PeachyJacobs: Those sorts of cross-overs are a legal minefield due to all the copyright issues so unless the respective rights holders can agree equitable terms with the developers, it will never happen.
  • Great news! Only project I want more from them is a proper remaster of MK 1-3.
  • This "Tweet" can only be to troll fans, and my prediction is that it's a fake tease (if you will)

It's convenient that the text on the monitor to the right tells exactly what fans would do, namely, tear info like apart..
