Rebellion has released a new CGI trailer for Sniper Elite 5, “hinting at” the game's new Invasion Mode, in which players will be able to drop into each other's Campaign as an Axis Sniper, to ruin their day (not unlike Deathloop's invasions). Offering “high rewards” should you eliminate a player or take out the Axis invader, the new mode will also support co-op play.
That means a 2-player co-op team can be invaded by an Axis Sniper, whose goal is to dispatch two Allied Snipers, while the Allies seek to weed out the invader and kill them. As an Axis Sniper, you'll be able to use AI Axis forces to locate the Allied player. This entails tagging your Axis buddies, who will then display the Allied Snipers' last known location on the map when spotted using their ‘Eagle Eyes’ ability.
The Allied Sniper(s), meanwhile, can use invasion phones around the map to determine the last known location of their Axis hunter, although phones can be booby trapped and overuse will raise suspicions and potentially give your location away. Should the Axis Sniper be successful in carrying out their mission, weapons items, and skin unlocks are available as rewards, while Allied Snipers who kill the invader can bag weapon and character skins. Both players can also earn bonus XP.
You can, of course, switch Invasion Mode off in the Sniper Elite 5 Campaign, if you'd prefer.
“For those players who just want a solo gameplay experience there will be the option to switch Invasion Mode off, but we recommend that everyone gives it a try at some point," says Rebellion CTO Chris Kingsley. “We have been having a lot of fun with it in the studio, jumping into each other’s games and finding innovative, stealthy ways to take each other out.”
Sniper Elite 5 will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC in 2022, seeing the return of elite marksman Karl Fairburne in a new mission to uncover the Nazi's ‘Operation Kraken’, which will take him to the battlefields of France during 1944.
