Embracer Group, the parent company of THQ Nordic and Koch Media, has announced that it was entered into an agreement to acquire Dark Horse Media.

Dark Horse is probably best known for publishing comics such as Hellboy, The Mask, and Sin City, and also works on several licensed comic book adaptations, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Wars, as well as video game books such as The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia.

The acquisition is being made in order to boost Embracer Group's “transmedia capabilities”, and the games company also has plans for the “creation of new video games” utilising the 300+ intellectual properties owned or controlled by Dark Horse.

“I can’t express the excitement I feel as Dark Horse moves into this new chapter in our history,” says Dark Horse CEO and founder Mike Richardson. “The synergies that exist with the Embracer network of companies promises exciting new opportunities not only for Dark Horse, but also for the creators and companies we work with. I’ve had a number of compelling conversations with Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors and I’m very impressed with him and what he and his team have built. I have to say, the future for our company has never looked brighter.”

This is just one of the latest of Embracer Group's many acquisitions, which have recently included Borderlands developer Gearbox Software, 3D Realms, World War Z developer Saber Interactive, and Shadow Warrior studio Flying Wild Hog.

  • I vaguely remember there was a terrible Hellboy PS3 game. Would be an interesting IP to see a good game of.
  • Woah, I see potential here. They're doing a Disney-Aquired-Marvel-And-Star-Wars move. Dark Horse Comics may NOT be a Marvel Comics but they do have a lot of good characters in their roster. Maybe not going to make them into movies but games instead and that will still work. Look at Joe Mad's Battle Chasers...

Makes me wonder if they can have a go at a Tomb Raider spin-off since Dark Horse published the comics?
