Square Enix has released new gameplay for the upcoming Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, celebrating the 34th anniversary of the very first Final Fantasy, released in December 1987. The new trailer features footage and cut-scenes from the game, as well as a recreation of the northern bridge scene from Final Fantasy I.

In Final Fantasy Origin, an "alternate retelling" of the beloved sequence will feature, offering insights into the “dark origins” of Garland, via the journey taken by protagonist Jack and his loyal allies. "Garland, who is defeated at the beginning of the story, is reborn 2000 years in the past as Chaos where he continues to rule over darkness, but is once again bested by the Warriors of Light…" Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi explained.

“I created this endless cycle in the story because it was the first game in the series, and even though it is a pixel art RPG, I thought that by giving the story such layers, it wouldn't just be viewed as some kind of ‘toy,’ and we could elevate it to an authentic form of entertainment,” he added. "That was the reason behind this decision. I think the same can be said for the scene when the player crosses the northern bridge, and the title and opening story text are shown on screen."

Stranger in Paradise's story will be told from the perspective of Garland, aiming to create a different kind of emotional impact, by depicting events from the viewpoint of the game's villain. You can take a look at the gameplay in the video below, and compare the recreated bridge scene with the original. You'll also find details on basic and advanced jobs, abilities, equipment, and multiplayer.

You'll be able to dive into Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on 18th March 2022.
