Sifu Won't Have Difficulty Levels and Can Be Beaten in a Single Run Without Ageing

Developer Sloclap has confirmed that Sifu, its upcoming kung fu roguelike, won't have difficulty levels in the traditional sense, and, if you're good enough, the game can be beaten in a single run without dying or ageing the protagonist.

“We want Sifu to challenge players and to encourage them to learn, improve and adapt,” Producer Pierre Tarno told MP1st. “The ability to rise up from death will help new players by allowing them to fail and try again multiple times when they face difficulty. But the price of mistakes will rapidly increase, and in order to fully complete the game they will have to master the combat system.”

Sifu tells the story of a kung fu master who starts his path to exact revenge upon a gang of assassins at the age of twenty. Each time you're beaten in combat, an ancient pendant resurrects you and advances your age, giving you another chance to take down the assassins. You can end up running out of revives, if you die and age too many times, however.

When asked whether it'll be possible to defeat Sifu in the space of one run without  dying or ageing once, Tarno replied simply in the affirmative, saying “Yes!” and nothing else. Presumably, this will be the ultimate challenge to strive for when Sifu launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC on 8th February 2022.

  • @deviousdace - Developers love adding shit trophies like that and i bloody hate it! I like to complete everything, but not at the expense of my time and sanity! Make trophies doable and within a challenge that is reasonable, not crazy!
  • Isn't the whole point of a roguelike beating it "in one try" because you only have once chance and then start from scratch?
    Or is this a marketing roguelike as in "we have no clue what it means but it's a word floating around that magically generates interest in our title".

    Combat looks pretty complicated, but also very brutal! Looking forward to this.

    I got this from the linked article. But that doesn't make it a roguelike. Not even a roguelite. More like a soulslike mechanic where you die every so often but get punished for it and there are limited tries.
  • Easy trophy lol. If there was one thing in my time has a trophy hunter is grabbing those ultra rare and hard trophy because that's what achievement are suppose to mean. Otherwise just make game give you plat on first boot.

  • I could see a beat the game without aging past 30 or 40 as a trophy giving players a chance to fail 2 or 3 times depending on home much we age from a loss. beat the game without dying does seem a bit extreme for a trophy but other games have done similar trophies. Alien: Isolation, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Dead Space 2 to name a couple.
