Call of Duty: Vanguard Offers Detailed Gameplay Guide to the New Zombies Mode

Matt Lorrigan

Treyarch, the developer behind Call of Duty: Vanguard's Zombies mode this year, has dropped a ton of information to prepare players for taking on the zombie hordes.

This comes courtesy of a detailed ‘Gameplay Guide to Vanguard Zombies’ post on the developer's official website, and it breaks down everything from new Dark Aether mechanics, building on its introduction in Black Ops Cold War, to equipable covenants and upgradable perks.

Call of Duty: Vanguard's Zombies mode will see the introduction of four Dark Aether entities, each of which offers a unique artefact to players which can be used to gain a powerful ability.

  • Dragon of Saraxis: Spawns an Aethereal explosive, dealing massive damage to enemies who set it off.
  • Mask of Bellekar: Cloaks you in Dark Aether, masking your presence from enemies for 5 seconds.
  • Sword of Inviktor: Sparks a ring of Aethereal flame to boost damage for anyone within its radius for 15 seconds.
  • Horn of Norticus: Summons a frigid vortex, damaging enemies with the initial blast and slowing those that enter.

The game will also have eleven covenants which can equipped in return for new Sacrificial Heart loot items, with three covenants able to be equipped at once.

  • Bloodlust: Melee attacks do more damage and heal you.
  • Resurrectionist: Revive allies faster.
  • Brain Rot: Chance to turn enemies to your side.
  • Cryofreeze: Chance to slow enemies.
  • Death Blow: Critical kills return bullets to the clip.
  • Ammo Gremlin: Stowed weapons refill ammo from stock automatically.
  • Dead Accurate: Consecutive hits on the same enemy do more damage.
  • Splatterfest: Enemies killed by explosions may explode.
  • Unholy Ground: Deal more damage while stationary.
  • Cull the Weak: Deal more damage to slowed or stunned enemies.
  • Mother Lode: Chance to keep Equipment after using it.

Perks have been reworked from previous games too, with five perk fountains found around the Der Anfang map. The base tier of each perk will be completely free, but you can upgrade them up to a maximum of Tier 4 by spending Essence, improving the potency of each perk. You can check out the five perks below.

  • Fiendish Fortitude – Increases health.
  • Diabolical Damage – Increases critical damage.
  • Venomous Vigor – Boosts health regeneration speed.
  • Demonic Frenzy – Boosts reload speed.
  • Aethereal Haste – Boosts movement speed.

There's plenty more information about Zombies to discover, so check out the blog post for the full lowdown, if you want to prep before the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard on 5th November 2021.
