Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin's Creed Infinity, the upcoming live-service game in the open world action series, won't be free-to-play.

The news came during Ubisoft's most recent earnings call (as spotted by Gamespot) with CEO Yves Guillemot going into slightly more detail about what to expect from the mysterious title.

“It's not going to be a free-to-play [game],” Guillemot confirmed. “This game is going to have a lot of narrative elements in it. It's going to be very innovative game, but it will have what players already have in all the other Assassin's Creed games, all the elements that they love... right from the start. So it's going to be a huge game. But with lots of elements that already exist in the games that we published in the past.”

Assassin's Creed Infinity is apparently still in the early stages of development, with an earlier report suggesting that the game could release in 2024. It is being developed as a joint project between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec, with Ubisoft “committed to staying true to the DNA of Assassin's Creed”.

  • I like that non-committal smoke bomb phrases. Seriously, what is that supposed to mean? It's an AC game? Wowza. Or did he just say it will be a pure rehash of older games?

Anyway, I like the concept in theory as it would allow them to revisit some locations like Russia or India or bring in new ones the fans wished for like Dutch Golden Age or WW I without having to make a whole game around it. Though with recent history of Ubisoft I certainly have lowered expectations.
  • They'll simply make you pay full price for it before it quickly turns into a F2P game, however. The state of games anymore (and it's been like this for a while) has turned me into one negative bastard.
  • It can be a free-to-play game without actually being free to play …
  • Hmmm, so make a f2p game, but charge for it and still have the f2p mechanics in there like ridiculous grinding that can be dealt with by some $$$
  • I quote Mr Krabs: i like money :D
  • 'it will have what players already have in all the other Assassin's Creed games' 'with lots of elements that already exist in the games that we published in the past.'

Charging for a game type nobody asked for and doesn't offer anything new. Why wouldn't you pay for that.....
  • I guess my money will go elsewhere! lol
