While we thought that Call of Duty: Vanguard was a follow-up to 2017's Call of Duty: WWII, it seems that it could actually be the first entry in a proposed trilogy, should plans being concocted by the game's writers come to fruition. Said plans involve creating “iconic” recurring characters, in a similar vein to Captain Price and Soap from the Modern Warfare games.
“We came into this process saying, ‘how do we make the iconic CoD characters?’ because you don’t really have that in Call of Duty right now,” remarked Sam Maggs, contracter at developer Sledgehammer Games, in an interview (via VGC). “You know when you think about a game like Halo, you think of Master Chief, but when you think of CoD there’s not really those standout characters.”
Ultimately, the hope is to spin Vanguard out into a pair of sequels, with “two more stories” to be told should players take to its “flagship” characters. “We are hoping that if people love them as much as we do, that we get to continue to tell the story of these people and make them sort of like figureheads for this era of CoD basically,” Maggs added.
In Vanguard, you'll play as five different hero characters, including Arthur Kingsley, Polina Petrova, Lucas Riggs, and Wade Jackson, who together make up an international squad whose mission it is to take out an Axis threat, towards the end of the Second World War. Recently, a story trailer and behind the scenes video showcased the game's WWII narrative, and offered insights from both Maggs and writer Tochi Onyebuchi.
Call of Duty: Vanguard launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on 5th November, while the game's Zombies mode is set to be unveiled tomorrow.
