Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Update Adds 40FPS Support in Fidelity Mode for 120Hz TVs

Insomniac Games has released a new update for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, adding in some interesting support for 120Hz TVs, as well as some bug fixes which should help with trophy collecting.

The most interesting part of the update, which brings the game to Version 1.002, is the addition of a 120Hz display mode. When switched on with a compatible 120Hz TV, input latency is reduced, and the game's Fidelity Mode now targets 40FPS, rather than 30FPS. This is interesting, because until now, 30FPS and 60FPS were most often used because they divided evenly on a 60Hz display. Now though, on a 120Hz display, 40FPS is viable without causing problems like screen tearing and creating a juddery image. We've tried it out and it looks pretty great, so perhaps we'll see more 40FPS options like this popping up as 120Hz TVs become more standard.

Elsewhere, Rift Apart has added in some more speedrunning options, allowing players to turn off the slowdown that occurs when levelling up a weapon or character. And on the trophy side of things, Insomniac has fixed a bug that meant that some Grunthors killed didn't count towards the Extinction Event Trophy. A bug that caused Challenge Mode not to start properly if the graphics mode was changed has also been resolved, which should sort out some of the problems players have had with the Fully Stacked Trophy.

  • Why add such an odd Frame Rate instead of either a solid 30 or 60 FPS?
