Teased last month, Sonic Team is currently working on an entirely new Sonic the Hedgehog game due to release in 2022, which it's hoped will spark a template for future Sonic titles, according to Producer Takashi Iizuka - in much the same way 1999's Sonic Adventure heralded the arrival of full 3D Sonic games.

“The new title in development is progressing towards a 2022 release, so I can’t really call it an Anniversary title,” Iizuka told Sonic Stadium. “However, Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team."

While next year's new Sonic the Hedgehog project is right in the middle of development, Iizuka stopped short of revealing any details on the game, including what that mysterious glyph at the end of the teaser trailer means. Iizuka does promise something “new and challenging," however.

“"ince this title is still mid-development there is nothing I can speak to, but I did want to say that the development team has been spending their time to do something new and challenging," Iizuka commented. “Through a lot of trial and error the team is looking to present to everyone a new Sonic game, and I hope your warm support of their work can motivate them to really deliver against that challenge.”

Sonic 2022 has yet to be given a proper title, so it's early days yet. Expect to see it sometime next year for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with Sonic Colors Ultimate coming on 7th September to keep you occupied until then. You can also look forward to a Sonic Origins Collection in 2022.

  • I just hope this is a traditional 2D Side Scrolling Sonic game and not a full 3D one, because those always suck due to the awful camera and lousy level design :(.
  • Sonic 4D it is
  • I don't understand how sonic adventure got 3d right and no other sonic game since has.

Sonic forces was ok I guess, not played much of colours because I found the Wii version a bit unresponsive.
