One of last generation’s breakout hits was, without a shadow of a doubt, Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames’ NieR: Automata. A game so beloved by all that most people eventually jumped on it without even realising it was a sequel, and if they did, they didn’t care about the original at all. It was Automata that sparked publisher, Square Enix to turn around and say, in a big internal meeting, “Hold on a second, folks, does nobody realise that there was a NieR game before Automata? Let’s show them again in case they missed it!”

And like that, that’s how Nier: Replicant Ver 1.22474487139… came to be, with ellipses and a ridiculous name and all. Well, that’s how we imagine it went down. In truth, it probably involved a lot of pie charts and spreadsheets, but that’s boring and wouldn’t serve as a fluff intro to a gameplay video we made, in which Rich and I talk about our experiences with the upcoming remaster.

In fact, while this is a remaster, and a fairly faithful one based upon our recent hands-on ahead of next month’s launch, it’s also the first time that we in the West get this version of the original NieR. Previously, Replicant was only released in Japan on PlayStation 3, while Gestalt was released on the Xbox 360 in Japan and elsewhere in the world. Cool story, eh?

A cool enough story to perhaps ponder while you set your eyeballs on our preview and listen to our dulcet tones. That should keep you busy until NieR: Replicant launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on 23rd April, or maybe not, but it should keep you occupied for about 10-minutes at the very least.

  • Played original and automata. So, very interested for this one.
  • There's absolutely going to be sneaky new plot additions and secrets in this version, looking forward to finding them.
