With the Tomb Raider series celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, developer Crystal Dynamics has released a new video that outlines its future plans for Lara Croft, as well as the celebratory things it has in store for its quarter-century milestone.
Among the future plans for Lara's adventures, Crystal Dynamics envisions stories told after the original Core Design era, having set up Ms. Croft as the intrepid globetrotting treasure hunter we all know and love in 2013's Tomb Raider reboot and its two sequels, the last one being 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
"We envision a future of Tomb Raider unfolding after these established adventures," Franchise Game Director Will Kerslake states in the video (below). "Telling stories that build upon the breadth of both Core Design and Crystal Dynamics games, working to unify these timelines."
As such, Crystal Dynamics' next Tomb Raider games will see Lara as the established, seasoned adventurer from the original Core Design titles, the first of which was released in October 1996. Kerslake acknowledges that picking up with a 25-year history to consider won't be a small tasks, and so there are no immediate plans for a major game announcement as yet.
A year-long community celebration is planned to mark Tomb Raider's 25th anniversary, however, with Crystal Dynamics highlighting cosplay, fan art, live streams, and interviews, as well as “some special extras” that are being kept under wraps. An animated Tomb Raider Netflix show is also in the pipeline, so that's something to look forward to.
