Assemble Entertainment has announced Squadron 51, an arcadey shoot-em-up with a fantastic visual style.

The game is heavily inspired by the low-budget sci-fi films of the 1950s, such as War of the Worlds, Godzilla and Dr. Strangelove, and it captures that visual style perfectly, with flying saucers that look like they are props made from dinner plates, and aircraft that move like models on strings. Quite frankly, it looks brilliant.

“We’re huge fans of classic sci-fi horror and we jumped at the opportunity to co-publish Squadron 51 with our partner WhisperGames,” said Assemble Entertainment CEO Stefan Marcinek.

The game will feature classic SHMUP gameplay with four unique aircraft to pilot, eleven different environments, two player co-op and even live-action FMV sequences to really sell that classic sci-fi feel.

Squadron 51 launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC later in 2021. Make sure you check out the trailer down below!

  • looks gorgeous! just hope it won't be crazy hard
  • I love the WWII planes. The big one is a PBY Catalina. Wasn't used much as fighting craft in reality, more for recon and search and rescue because they were big, slow-moving seaplanes.

But, there was a squadron of attack PBYs, that were equipped with radar and did night-only raids against Japanese merchant shipping and shore installations. They were painted flat black to make them less visible and vulnerable, and these "Black Cat" operations, as the squadron came to be known, had such a degree of success that a few PBY squadrons were assigned to the role.

COD: World at War had a mission inspired by the Black Cats.
  • The big plane is actually a short Sunderland.
