Nightdive Studios has confirmed that Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition, a remaster of the original 1997 point-and-click adventure game, won't be released this year.

Speaking to Eurogamer in an interview, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick explained that the remaster wouldn't be able to make its previous 2020 release window.

"There have been some obstacles we've had to overcome in terms of the old technology the game uses," Kick stated. "And our hunt for the original source code and assets have come up empty."

Kick says that Nightdive has entered discussions with EA about obtaining some of the original assets for the game, but haven't been able to get a clear answer, saying that it is "very unlikely" they would release any source code or original assets to Nightdive for legal reasons.

"We're in a really difficult middle ground where we can't really do what is typically done in a remaster," Kick explained. "We had to invent new pipelines to extract the data and to modify it in a way that would present it in even a slightly higher resolution or higher fidelity. So yeah, it's been a real challenge."

Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in 2021 or beyond.
