Players will be able to unlock digital items when earning trophies on the PlayStation 5.
Sony offered players our first look at the PS5 user interface last week, and while the video gave us a look at some cool features, such as picture-in-picture screen sharing and a new Activities system, we didn't get a proper look at how trophies will work on the new console.
However, a few eagle-eyed viewers (via MP1ST) have spotted that certain trophies that were highlighted during the walkthrough appear to unlock some digital items directly through the console. In PS5 launch title Destruction All Stars, for example, earning the Rookie trophy will unlock a Profile Banner, while earning the Wreckognised trophy will bag you a new Profile Avatar.
You may remember that some PS4 games had a similar system; players who earned a platinum trophy in Marvel's Spider-Man were sent an email from PlayStation with a code to unlock a unique Spider-Man avatar for their profile. However, it looks like this is now directly integrated into the console UI on PS5, meaning you don't have to worry about accidentally missing a rogue email. We imagine this won't be supported by every game, and it certainly isn't supported with every trophy - a couple of Sackboy: A Big Adventure trophies early in the video don't offer any rewards - but it's a cool feature that will make unlocking certain trophies just a little bit more rewarding.
We can't wait to get our hands on it and try it out for ourselves when the PS5 launches on 12th November in US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, before releasing worldwide on 19th November.
