PS5 Trophies Will Be Able to Unlock Digital Rewards Through the Console

Players will be able to unlock digital items when earning trophies on the PlayStation 5.

Sony offered players our first look at the PS5 user interface last week, and while the video gave us a look at some cool features, such as picture-in-picture screen sharing and a new Activities system, we didn't get a proper look at how trophies will work on the new console.

However, a few eagle-eyed viewers (via MP1ST) have spotted that certain trophies that were highlighted during the walkthrough appear to unlock some digital items directly through the console. In PS5 launch title Destruction All Stars, for example, earning the Rookie trophy will unlock a Profile Banner, while earning the Wreckognised trophy will bag you a new Profile Avatar.

You may remember that some PS4 games had a similar system; players who earned a platinum trophy in Marvel's Spider-Man were sent an email from PlayStation with a code to unlock a unique Spider-Man avatar for their profile. However, it looks like this is now directly integrated into the console UI on PS5, meaning you don't have to worry about accidentally missing a rogue email. We imagine this won't be supported by every game, and it certainly isn't supported with every trophy - a couple of Sackboy: A Big Adventure trophies early in the video don't offer any rewards - but it's a cool feature that will make unlocking certain trophies just a little bit more rewarding.

We can't wait to get our hands on it and try it out for ourselves when the PS5 launches on 12th November in US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, before releasing worldwide on 19th November.

  • What an original idea.
  • this was a feature in the xbox 360 times. i rememeber that in red dead redemption 1 if you got a hat shot(not head) you got a cowboayhat for your xbox live avatar. soooooo not the newest thing we get here
  • About time we got a use for trophies. And yes, the X360 had 'avatar awards' which were like a smaller set of achievements, I unlocked Doomguy's armour and helmet in Doom 2, various armour suits and outfits in other games too. not every game had them, but it was a neat little addition.
  • I think I'd be happier if they used all resources to develop a better certification process that ensured trophies aren't glitched at launch, vs. even more clutter and crap for the UI. But yeah. I'm being positive. So yay for avatars and banners that only you care about and have only cosmetic value, that real people are paid real money to create. Wheeeee.
  • Pointless feature for myself. Almost seems like they are pushing hardcore toward the younger generations with all this trivial bells and whistles. At the end of the day, I just wan a system to play games that is solid.
  • @ #5 ... You hit the nail on the head with this, but it is more than a generational thing. It is bells and whistles and trivial, shiny and meaningless things aimed at stupid people, not just the younger generation. Like you, I want a system to play games that is solid. And with trophies that aren't glitched.
  • This is nice to have for trophy hunters, I know the community has been asking for this for a while. @5 It seems they are pushing towards trophy hunters to me with the progress cards, plus Insomniac made it a big deal that you can platinum Spider-Man Remastered even if you already got it with the 2018 version. @4/6 I’m sorry that you have experience glitched trophies, it sucks I know. With my experience though, it seems like Playstation exclusives don’t really have glitched trophies and if they do it seems they patch it rather quickly. Third party games are another thing however, that’s why I usually don’t really buy Ubisoft games Day 1. Glitched trophies/achievements seem to happen to both Xbox and Playstation and it seems to be third party games at fault. If I remember correctly about the UI, both Xbox Series X (which runs the UI at 1080p) and Playstation 5 (wrinkles) have said that they will be changing/updating the UI up until launch and further after launch as well.
  • I remember when Playstation Home would have various rewards for in-game milestones from cosmetics for the avatar to decorative items. Those were neat little incentives, and it would be nice to see some perks outside the metagame of trophy hunting. Still not in any particular rush to get a PS5. Nothing new to the platform has me especially hyped and I already got an extensive backlog to keep busy even if I never buy another game.
  • @5 & 6 you both are right that it is important that the new system needs to be focused on delivering a solid gaming experience. Too many times (for me at least) will a game just crash and pop up an error report only for me to re-launch it and get past the part that had an unknown error. I am a hardcore trophy hunter and can appreciate rewards for trophies but I feel all these little things are just to outdo Microsoft's Xbox and sell more consoles. Great games and a solid console will always outsell the competition or at least earn you a profit. The extra little things should be just that: extra and little.
  • Umm..is everybody okay? I remember that this used to be a feature that everyone wanted. People used to say that trophies were useless and should have some sort of incentive. I think this is awesome. I've been wanting this for awhile so it's cool they're integrating this into the system. After all I thought this was a trophy site. I would think more people would like this. Also yeah the 360 did do this but guess what? News Flash: Playstation and Xbox have been copying each other for years. Who cares?
  • They need to bring back the rewards system where you could earn points towards PSN money and whatnot. Like you get enough points for $10 PSN credit if you platinumed 10 games, but then 500 points for 100 silver trophies and it all adds up for trophy hunters. I think in two years I earned like $170 of PSN credit.
  • Lame. How about rewards players actually care about? If a gamer is earning a tons of trophies = lots of game time on Playstation, surely they could be rewarded with free games, DLC or store credit.
