Ubisoft has internally rebooted its long-delayed Skull & Bones, according to a report from VGC.
The pirate-them-up was first announced at E3 2017, and missed its 2018 launch window. The title has hit multiple delays in the years after, and we've not seen any new trailers or details on Skull & Bones since E3 2018.
VGC reports that Skull & Bones struggled to "carve itself a unique position" within the company alongside other open-world titles such as Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs. Ubisoft Singapore attempted to refine their initial concept, but in 2019 the publisher made the decision to shift Skull & Bones away from the $60 box model and reboot it as a live service title.
This new vision for the game will feature "a persistent game world with quests, characters and storylines that will drastically evolve and change over time" and react to the actions of the player community. This has been heavily inspired by Fortnite's model, and Ubisoft also want to push it as a more collaborative and social title to bring in a wider audience outside of the action genre.
This shift in vision has also resulted in a change of management, with Ubi veteran Elisabeth Pellen brought in as creative director. Pellen worked as a writer and director on 2003's XIII and has worked on many of the Ghost Recon and Assassin's Creed games, among others.
Perhaps we'll get to see this new rebooted Skull & Bones at the second Ubisoft Forward digital event later this year.
