Splinter Cell To Be Experimented With on "Different Devices", Says Ubisoft CEO

Every E3 and Gamescom presents another opportunity for Ubisoft to dash hopes of Splinter Cell ever making a return to consoles and PC. This year's E3 was no different, with an explanation from Ubi CEO Yves Guillemot preceding the event, explaining why there hasn't been a new Sam Fisher outing since Blacklist.

Apparently, it's simply a case of the pressure to deliver being too much to bear, but Guillemot has recently stated that Ubisoft is planning to explore Splinter Cell in some capacity going forward, albeit in a different guise to what you might be accustomed to. What this new direction might be, however, is being kept under wraps for the time being.

"There will be some new types of experiments, but on more different devices," Guillemot told GamerSky while on a visit to China.  "We are working a little bit on the brand today to come back at one point. We can’t say when, because, as you know, it takes time. But each time we have to find the right experience to come back big."

It's not entirely clear what that means for the Splinter Cell series, whether Fisher will be left to exist on mobile devices like in upcoming Tom Clancy mash-up Elite Squad, or something else. But surely one day, Splinter Cell will have to return to traditional platforms, right? At this point, we're not all that certain.

  • Uh oh.....
  • That translates to getting some shitty mobile game that nobody is asking for. Oof.
  • different devices = mobile and tablet.
  • Under pressure to deliver a good game is understandable, but aren't there talented writers out there? Guess no new Half-Life either.
  • Different devices also could mean VR headsets or even AR. Would be laughable if they got booed off the stage for Splinter Cell Go, though.
  • I got a feeling there will be a Splinter Cell GO type of game.
  • FUCK Ubisoft. They keep ruining Assassins Creed by turning it into a shitty Witcher clone. You're not even an assassin anymore, just a generic brawler. Now they want to turn SC into a mobile app. Its' BS. They used to be my favorite developer but not anymore. They are going the way of EA and nickel and diming everyone.
  • Ubisoft isn't interested in doing anything in which there isn't an easy, cookie cutter method for including microtransactions. That's really why there hasn't been a new game all gen, in addition to the fact that Ubi Toronto was turned into a support team after Jade Raymond left.
  • Hopefully a free to play mobile collectible card game. Cause that’s what all the fans are clamoring for.
