Elden Ring Gameplay "Heavily Based" on Dark Souls

Revealed during E3 this week, Elden Ring is the oft-rumoured collaboration between Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Dark Souls developer FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki. While that alone sounds like a wildly ambitious project, it's actually going to be potentially bigger than you might think.

"Due to this, the scale of the world and its narrative, as well as the depth and freedom of exploration have increased dramatically," Miyazaki told the Xbox Wire. "It is without a doubt our biggest title yet in terms of sheer volume." The director went on to state that From is trying its own open world approach, "with a large, open field to play in."

If you're wondering what to expect in terms of gameplay, From won't be veering too far from what it knows, its latest game to be - perhaps unsurprisingly - "heavily based on Dark Souls". Despite that, you'll also be able to travel by horse, although areas inhabited by NPCs won't feature, but Dark Souls-style ruins will be in abundance.

"Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG with a fantasy setting. Gameplay-wise, it’s heavily based on Dark Souls," Miyazaki explained in an interview with IGN. "However, that doesn’t mean that it plays out in the same way. With a more open and vast environment, the way combat plays out becomes fundamentally different."

Elden Ring will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A release date has yet to be announced.

  • The main question I have about this game is will it have: a) a poison swamp, and b) really really long bridges. Actually, I think I know the answer.
  • Yes please, and then yes some more on the "heavily based on Dark Souls"! I was put off greatly by Sekiro, beautiful looking game, but the samurai hack/slash, super heavy on parrying style is not my cup of tea. So I need some more FS rooted in DS style!

  • Glad to hear it. Sekiro had a lot of good qualities but the combat was just thoroughly unenjoyable to me. I'm not a fan of endless parrying i want to get in and fight
  • @4 Technically true, but FS made both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. They didn't own the legal rights to the "Demon's Souls" IP (Sony did) so they ripped off their own game.
