Coming from the mind of Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time creator Patrice Désilets, it should come as no surprise that Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an ambitious project, charting the course of human evolution from ape to homo sapien, with a survival-based sandbox to explore.

Having played the game, we sat down with Désilets to talk all about Ancestors, discovering how many publishers said 'no' to his pitch, expecting another Assassin's Creed; the politics and hierarchy that comes with big studios and AAA production; and the journey the game has gone through since its inception. From being something that adhered closely to science, to something episodic with narration, to a more fun iteration, Ancestors has been through a lot.

Ancestors is also a toolbox for more games to come from Panache, with Désilets stating that he has 15-20 ideas in his portfolio, including a return to passion project, 1666: Amsterdam. To find out more about how hard it was to make a prehistoric organic world, and what the ultimate goal is for players in Ancestors, check out our interview with Patrice Désilets below.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.
