THQ Nordic has recently been (quite rightly) subjected to criticism following the publisher holding an AMA on an image board known for hosting controversial content like hate speech and child pornography. Announcing that the AMA session would be taking place on 8chan, the publisher received a torrent of comments condemning the decision.
"The opportunity was here and we took it," THQ Nordic tweeted in response. "We got approached in a very friendly and polite manner and were assured, said person (shoutout to Mark) will take care of the nasty stuff. so, here we are."
Unsurprisingly, the AMA didn't go as planned, with the discussion hit by a procession of pornographic images and references to Hitler, Nazis, GamerGate, and a glut of other inappropriate content a mere 45 minutes in. Clearly, this was a horrible decision on THQ Nordic's part, but the company's PR & Marketing Director Phillipp Brock offered the following statement as an explanation:
"I personally agreed to this AMA without doing my proper due diligence to understand the history and the controversy of the site. I do not condone child pornography, white supremacy, or racism in any shape or form," his statement posted to Twitter begins. "I am terribly sorry for the short-sightedness of my decision, and promise to be far more vigorous in my assessment of these activities in the future."
He concluded, "This was not about being edgy, this blew up and I very much regret to have done it in the first place." Responding to why he kept the AMA going after the whole thing went off the rails amid criticism, Brock stated on GI.biz: "Yes. I was fucking overwhelmed with a plethora of different emotions to be honest," adding: "I am not a white supremacist, nor into child pornography, nor do I think this AMA was smart in hindsight and if I could, I would undo."
