From Software Isn't Too Keen on a Demon's Souls Remaster

Richard Walker

With Dark Souls Remastered enjoying a recent release, it's only natural to assume that Demon's Souls could also one day be in line for a similar treatment. After all, the PS3 Souls original would be a prime candidate for a remaster, and you'd imagine that many would be interested in revisiting the game.

However, From Software isn't overly keen on the idea of going back to Demon's Souls, with studio president Hidetaka Miyazaki likening it to revisiting past written work. "It’s like when you write - when you’re younger, you look back on [previous work] and you think ‘Oh, goodness what was I thinking,’" he told Game Informer.

"It’s not that I’m embarrassed, I just don’t like to look at my previous works," he added, explaining that Sony would also have to sign off on any potential Demon's Souls remaster, even if Miyzaki isn't completely opposed to the idea of it. "You’d have to see what they’re thinking about it," he said.

"If it was a studio that really loved the original work and really put their heart and soul into realising it again, then that’s something I would enjoy," Miyazaki said of a possible Demon's Souls remaster. "But it’s really complicated because I have these fond memories. Thinking about the idea of a remaster gives me kind of butterflies in my stomach and makes me a little nervous, so it’s complicated. But I understand there are many users and many players and fans out there who really love Demon’s, so if that’s something they could accomplish with a studio that loved the work, then yeah, I’d be okay with that."

Next up for From Software is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, due to arrive on 22nd March 2019, but Miyazaki will always fondly remember his first game. "That was the first action fantasy game that I created, or I directed," he said. "I have fond memories of it, but it’s definitely not my place to say they’ll remaster."

  • I personally think a Demon's Souls remaster can wait, if it happens, since all From Software are known for these days are the Souls games, they need to revive some of their older franchises and make something new (Sekiro seems kind of influenced by the Souls series, and Nioh by extension) to show they're not a one-trick pony. There's not many stealth games (that don't have the words Metal Gear in the title), so a new Tenchu game could act as a revival for the genre. The same could be said for the mecha genre, yet another dominated seemingly by a single franchise as of late, namely Gundam, so a new Armored Core would be nice too, as long as they stay as far away from the formula used for V and Verdict Day as possible.
  • Out of all the Souls games, I still think Demon's Souls is my favorite and the one that I have had the most fun playing.
  • I would love a remaster of this, I’d buy if for sure. I’d be happy wth a demons souls 2 as well. Time will tell I guess!
  • @1 I agree, it can wait. Dark souls games are meaty and fans play for years. We got darks souls 3 a couple years ago. Dark souls remastered last year, and sekiro in March. I’m honestly content. Maybe after 3 or 4 year of no souls games bring it out totally remastered from the ground up. I tried playing demon souls again when dark souls 3 came out. Controls were not fun imo.
  • Not everything needs to be remastered.
  • i would love a remastered demon souls on ps4 and pc a lot of other games need to be remastered not just from this company and this game i don't know why a lot of people are against that idea of remastered games besides most of the new games coming out seem mediocre or just awful unless you are lucky and find a few indie games and even then there only for pc half the time
  • I'm fine with it staying dead. I did enjoy Boletaria more than the others but, there are clear advancements in terms of gameplay that Demon's becomes a bit of a chore to play in comparison. I still have my disc, a PS3, the Platinum, the memories, and I no longer need anyone's help to get through the game again should I want to. ... I will also NEVER grind for Pure Dark Moonstone again.. Ever. Not even they paid me.
  • I'm not too bothered about Demons soul remake, they pretty much surpassed everything that game did in the Dark souls series. If FromSoftware were to remaster anything I'd want it to be Chromehounds.
