It appears that Pioneer, the sci-fi game teased in Watch Dogs 2 during a mission in which gifted hacker protagonist Marcus Holloway infiltrates Ubisoft's San Francisco studio and accesses a secret trailer intended for an E3 debut, has been cancelled. Thought to be pertaining to an actual game at the time (the Watch Dogs 2 teaser), it was later confirmed that Pioneer was indeed a real thing in active development.

Former Ubisoft Creative Director Alex Hutchinson, whose credits include Assassin's Creed III and Far Cry 4, recently tweeted that Pioneer is apparently no longer happening, with the simple message "RIP Pioneer". When asked in the same Twitter thread if the project is "super dead", Hutchinson responded with a trio of weeping emojis. We'll take that as a ''yes'.

While Ubisoft never actually gave Pioneer an official announcement or revealed details of any kind on the project, its cancellation seems equally muted. After all, we never knew what we'd have been getting in the first place. However, Hutchinson's reaction suggests that it could have been something worthwhile. Instead, we can look forward to Hutchinson's own sci-fi title, Journey to the Savage Planet, announced during The Game Awards in December.

Journey to the Savage Planet will be coming sometime in 2019. Pioneer will be coming never, it seems.
