For Shadow of the Tomb Raider Eidos-Montreal is "Excited To Up the Challenge of the Puzzles" - Interview

If you managed to coast through Crystal Dynamics' 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and 2015's follow-up Rise of the Tomb Raider, chances are you'll be feeling more than ready to tackle Shadow of the Tomb Raider next month. But wait there just a second, because this one is going to be a lot harder, with Deus Ex dev Eidos-Montreal now taking the reins.

Sitting down with Eidos-Montreal Lead Game Designer Heath Smith and Narrative Director Jason Dozois, we had a chat about how Lar's journey has evolved from game to game, and how the puzzles will be even more challenging thatn they have been in the past. So much so, in fact, that the studio had to implement individual sliders for adjusting difficulty across puzzles, combat and traversal.

The result is what might just be one of the most exciting Tomb Raider games in some time, as Ms. Croft finally becomes the person she was always destined to be, and faces one of the most dangerous, potentially world-ending threats she's ever encountered.   • More puzzles, less spammy horde fights hopefully. Well, I can dream ...
  • ROTTR zombie/horde mode was okay for me because we can climb trees and perch on a "safe zone" and the nasties down below can't reach you 90% of the time... compare that to COD zombies (which I dislike a lot) it's chicken feed... As for the puzzles... I hope the difficulty isn't tied to a trophy. People like solving it hard, some people don't - everyone should be able to earn the same trophy regardless of difficulty preference...
  • Puzzle difficulty. That's cute. How about you shut Lara up so she doesn't explain what needs to be done the moment you enter a room? @5: Nope.

  • @5: I wasn't talking about Cold Darkness or Lara's Nightmare. There are more than enough fights in both titles where you are pitched against a cool dozen of enemies or multiple waves. Especially near the end when you have to defeat some dozen of the supernatural enemies. Regarding difficulty, I'd be very surprised to not see something like "play the game with all sliders to eleven in Survivor". Sadly the new games have a lot of annoying trophies.
  • #8 I'm pretty sure the game would be rewarding in the end - regardless. One can keep his hopes high, can't he? XD... ROTTR "timed trials" which were new and I kinda struggled in the beginning turned out to be "okay" in the end. I hope all these "this-game-is-gonna-be-like-Uncharted" vibe will turn out to be the usual TR2013 (sans online) scenario.
