Code Vein is but a few months away from release, and following the last demo we got hands-on time with back in October 2017, we had another chance to get to grips with Bandai Namco's other Souls-esque action RPG that isn't Dark Souls. Have our hack and slash skills improved? No. Not one bit.

But why let that get in the way of seeing some fresh gameplay from a more complete build of the game, looking far slicker and smoother than before? Code Vein is shaping up very nicely indeed, its various gameplay mechanics coming together, as your Revenant protagonist carves his way through demons, using the 'gifts' at his disposal.

You'll have the help of your companion too, the roster of which has expanded since we last played Code Vein, so rather than having only Mia in tow, you can now switch companions at any Mistle (Code Vein's version of Dark Souls' bonfires) in the game. Yakumo and Louis are among the other companions, each of whom have their own weapons and traits to aid you in battle.

If you'd rather go it alone without the help of a companion, then you can do so in Code Vein, but you can expect a far stiffer challenge if you do. And Code Vein isn't exactly a walk in the park. It's tough enough to give even hardened Souls veterans a decent run for their money, and indeed, the bosses don't pull any punches, as you'll see in our gameplay video. Take a look:
