Deep Silver has announced that Shenmue III's release window has shifted once again, having been previously pushed into the second half of 2018 last year. Now, we won't see Ryo in his latest story until sometime in 2019. That's assuming it's not delayed again at some point.

"The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe," the brief explanation for this latest delay reads on Deep Silver's official site.

Shenmue III Game Designer Yu Suzuki also offered a sincere apology to backers on the game's Kickstarter page, with a pledge to also increase the game's quality. "To all of our backers, we are very sorry for the delay. After much discussion with our partners, Deep Silver, we have concluded that extending the release will allow us to deliver Shenmue III at its best. We promise to use this time to improve the quality of Shenmue III," he said.

Response to Shenmue III's trailers and screenshots haven't been particularly favourable so far, which is presumably why Deep Silver and Ys Net have decided to give the game some more time. Based on the images and gameplay we've seen thus far, it does look like Shenmue III could use the extra polish.

Shenmue III will be coming to PS4 and PC in 2019, giving you plenty of time to catch up with Shenmue I & II, due to launch later this year.

  • This is Mighty No.9 all over again.
  • This is what happens when you announce a game way too early, when it's nowhere close to being ready. The devs should have just kept their mouths shut until the game was 100% complete, then gone nuts with the promotion.
  • @2 It was announced so that they could raise funds for the game through Kickstarter.
  • This goes up there with FF7 Remake probably never gonna see the light of day on PS4 the way it's going
  • @Comment #1 by RRDude_PBB This game has way more elements than Mighty No.9 and would you rather a crappy game or a polished game? Beside Shenmue 1 and 2 HD is coming later this year so that will give you time to enjoy the first 2 games.
  • @5 If it’s anything like in trailer then it will need another 2 years of delay. Facial animations are horrible.
  • @5 You don't understand. This is history repeating itself. Shenmue 3 is a kickstarter project that's going to keep getting delayed and then it will turn out to be a shitty game. Don't hold your breath.
  • @7: I have to agree with you there. The signs are not looking good for this game so no one should be surprised if it gets delayed a few more times before finally getting released.
  • I helped Kickstart this along with 5 other games. The only games that have gotten an actual release were Project CARS and Yooka-Laylee, which are both average at best. Shenmue 3 and Knights and Bikes get delay after delay and Project Phoenix and Little Devil Inside will probably never see the light of day. Needless to say I'm done supporting game developers on Kickstarter.
  • @Comment #7 by RRDude_PBB It will turn out shitty only because people are going to go in with high expectations and rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. The developers are trying to keep it true to the series and keep it similar to the other games and if they didn't it just wouldn't look right to be honest. They did say that they will be modernizing certain things in the game but there will be options to play like the originals but truthfully I've went back to the originals just to experience them again with an open non-nostalgic vibe and the video game industry has advanced so much that they seemed rather mediocre by today's standards and I think that is why so many people are crapping on the third entry. But, We have to be careful what we wish for because we've begged and pleaded for this game for so long and just like Mighty No.9 being the "next big" Megaman-esque game also the return of Spyro people need to just be thankful that we are getting another entry instead of pissing on games that are being developed. Be very careful what you bitch about because Half Life 3 may never happen because whomever develops the game might not want to see all the hypocrisy that the gaming community is like now. Nothing but a bunch of self entitled crybabies. I also see this with the Final Fantasy VII Remake. Do you think any studio that is going to want to continue developing such a hugely popular game if all the fans just crap on it like they are. Just let the developers finish games and go in with low expectations like I did with Mighty No.9 and it's actually not that bad of a game to be honest.
  • @7 To be fair, this actually isn't a real kickstarter project. In this case, Kickstarter was used as a publicity tool. Obviously the project was not funded by Kickstarter revenue. I agree that it's a terribly mishandled project, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to compare it to real crowdfunded projects.
