LawBreakers Developer Boss Key Productions Closes Down

LawBreakers developer Boss Key Productions "is no more", studio founder Cliff Bleszinski announced in a statement via Twitter last night. While the developer gave LawBreakers its best shot on PS4 and PC, publisher Nexon writing the game off and it ultimately failing to find enough of an audience no doubt helped in leading to its untimely demise.

Boss Key strived to bring the studio back from the brink by capitalising on the popularity of battle royale titles like PUBG and Fortnite, with its own take in Radical Heights, which recently launched via early access on PC, but Bleszinski noted in his statement confirming closure of the studio that it was all "too little too late".

While Radical Heights's servers will remain active "for the near future", Boss Key Productions is essentially "no more", according to Bleszinski, who also announced that he's also taking a break from the games industry. Will he be back with something new? We'll have to wait and see. You can read the full statement below.

We wish all the best to those affected by the closure of Boss Key Productions.

  • Though it's sad to hear about people losing their jobs, it was bound to happen when they were busy imitating popular trends instead of coming up with something original. I have no doubt we'll see more shutting downs among those chasing the battle royale/live service dream. I wish the best of luck to all who are affected by this closure.
  • It sucks when people lose their jobs but Lawbreakers was a waste of $60 and Radical Heights was installed on my PC for about 20 minutes before I ended up uninstalling it. I'll always have fond memories of Cliffy B, the loveable douchebag who ran development on the original Gears trilogy.
  • I saw this coming a mile off but am surprised it didn't happen sooner. Whilst it sucks that so many people have just lost their jobs, it will do Cliffy B a world of good to eat some humble pie for a while.
  • As other have said this truly sucks for those who are going to lose their jobs but......This is what happens when you chase trends. You are either on the ground floor part of the Cool Kids or you are that awkward person always a month behind on the trend and get laughed at. It didn't work when people chased the Call of Duty trend, It didn't work out when people chased the MOBA trend and it will not work with the Overwatch/PUBG/Fortnite trend either. Gamers buy and play original ideas and if those ideas work become new trends. But if you just try to be a copy cat you then need to be better then what you are copying or you end up at the bottom.
  • Just goes to show that sometimes people fall backwards into success because I can't see how you go from being the lead designer of the original Gears of War trilogy, some of the best third person shooter games ever made, to poor imitations of the flavor of the month. It's been sad to watch.
  • I actually didn't mind the look of LawBreakers and would have gotten it as well but with all the reviews and people complaining about how poorly the PS4 version ran that is going to make your game bomb right out of the get go. Plus it didn't help that the said that this game was the next billion dollar game.
  • They never fixed the glitched trophy which is why I will never buy their game.
  • Lawbreakers delusion in an oversaturated market https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ4v2LgVlEA
  • Only an idiot would think this game had any chance of surviving. Strong competition, minimal exposure, horrible publisher, Cliffy B being an arrogant ass and pissing everyone off, zero g gimmick which people could get used to, horrible art direction (opinion, clearly), etc. It's a wonder it even managed to attract 50 players that were willing to remain active.
  • @9: At its lowest point, only 10 people were still playing this trainwreck - which is barely enough to get 1 match going. I knew instantly that this game was going to tank, because the advertising (such as it was) didn't make it look anything more than a shitty clone of other better games. Cliffy B is an arrogant ass and always has been but this time he caught it in the butt and will pay dearly for slagging off his former employers and belittling the very people he was trying to convince to buy this game. If LawBreakers had ben a Free-to-Play game then it may have stood a chance of surviving but as it is, it was dead on arrival and will almost certainly be shutdown within the next 12 months so play it whilst you still can.
