As Minecraft players on PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Xbox 360 and Wii U now represent under 5% of the active community playing the game, Mojang has confirmed that following the upcoming Update Aquatic, support for those old-gen consoles will be nixed to focus on current platforms.
"Although we’d love to keep bringing new content to all our players forever, the older generation of consoles now make up less than 5% of our active players," the developer noted in an update on its blog, "so we’ve made the difficult decision to focus our efforts to support players where they play Minecraft the most and where we plan to add new features."
While the Update Aquatic, with dolphins and other underwater treats, will still be heading to PS3, Vita, X360 and Wii U, it'll mark the final update for Minecraft on older platforms. Meanwhile, the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10 and mobile versions will be moving to the new Bedrock Engine where the Update Aquatic content will be released.
If you're playing the Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition, there's no need to change anything, as the game will still be supported in the same way it always has.
