Ubisoft's Michel Ancel spoke to Kotaku recently, and shed some more light on the development process behind Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Ancel stated that the game is "a very serious development for Ubisoft" and that the title had been in proper development since the completion of Rayman Legends in 2013. Bearing in mind the game was originally announced way back in 2008, that means there was a five-year period of downtime on the title... but Ancel states that was mostly due to technical limitations.

Ancel also stated that the game is still a very long way from release, and that Ubisoft wants something 'more concrete' to show before a formal reveal. That said, those Instagram teases Ancel released in October shouldn't be discredited: the developer states releasing those was a way to prove to the public that the game exists and is indeed being worked on.

Ancel said to Kotaku:

"[We had] big questions that are so big you can't know the answers because no physics engine can handle all of the dimensions and speeds and things like that. It's like 'Okay, if no physics engine can do it, how can we achieve that?'

"It's crazy and difficult to explain to people how technical making a game is. Now it's not anymore about polygons and things like that, it's about millions of behavioural AIs, systems, and giant spaceships crashing on big planets."

Expect a formal announcement of the game some point next year.

  • If The Last Guardian can see a release , I'm sure this one will eventually.
  • Give them five years, a decade, hell, multiple decades. If they viewed the original as anything but a half-baked, awkward mess it won't matter how much time they're given. It'll still suck.
  • They're figuring out how to fit a Season Pass, Microtransations, Pre-order DLC and map revealing towers into the game. And let's not forget the essential 13 slightly different Collector's Editions. :P
