E3 2016: Top 10 Most Anticipated Games

Yesterday we took a look at our most wanted announcements for this year’s E3, you know, the games that we would absolutely love to be announced. Today though, on the eve of the first of the show’s press conferences, our attention turns to those we’re excited to see more of – in essence, the games that have already been announced.

The games generally on this list aren’t necessarily the games that we’re most looking forward to throughout the year, but games we’ve not seen a lot of yet and we’re intrigued to see more of. For example, Gears of War 4, we’ve seen a ton of that already, so we left that out in favour of titles that are more of a mystery to us.

So, without further ado, here are our top 10 most anticipated games of 2016.

Mass Effect Andromeda

BioWare | EA

While this list isn’t in any particular order, if it was this badboy would be firmly routed in the number one spot. Why, you ask? Well, think about this for a minute… we’re talking about a next-gen Mass Effect title here.

Considering what BioWare did on the last-generation of consoles with Mass Effect, imagine what they can do on the new one. It’s been fairly quiet on the Mass Effect front too since the game’s announcement last year, but that leaked prototype gameplay video from earlier on this year was all kinds of awesome. Considering that Mass Effect Andromeda is due for an early release next year, we fully expect BioWare and EA to go loud and proud with the fourth iteration in the phenomenal franchise at this year’s show. Plus, we surely get to meet the new Shepherd as well, the new Garrus, the new Wrex, the new Ashley, the new Kaidan… actually, fuck Kaidan, who cares about that guy!

Titanfall 2

Respawn Entertainment | EA

The original Titanfall was a pretty damn impressive start for the newly formed Respawn Entertainment, and its mech-heavy gameplay, combined with the game’s fluent freerunning, it made for a fresh experience when it came to the multiplayer-sphere. There wasn’t really a game like it on consoles at the time.

It wasn’t perfect, of course, the first game in a franchise rarely is, but the foundations were there for Respawn to build a frickin’ mountain on it in terms of a sequel. More mechs? An actual single-player campaign? New cool innovations? Just what will Respawn be delivering? We don’t know! But thankfully, they’re coming armed to E3 and with its release penned in later for this year, you can be sure that they’re going to try and knock your bloody socks off!

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Ubisoft Paris | Ubisoft

I think it’s fair to say that Ghost Recon fell off the wagon a bit towards the end of the last-generation of consoles. Clearly stuck in two minds between the trademark tactical gameplay and the need to chase that future warfare dream, it never quite managed to live up to its billing.

Here we are though, a new generation, a new chance at success, and based purely on last year’s showing at E3, it looks like we should be in good hands. Emphasis on should. Open-world and Ubisoft go hand in hand these days, but throw in the tactical combat, drug cartels and 4-player co-op, and what’s not to be excited about? Throw in Bolivia and it’s diverse environments, it’s beautiful flora and fauna, and this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Detroit: Become Human

Quantic Dream | Sony

Love or hate David Cage and Quantic Dream’s spawns, you’ve got to respect the man and his studio. You’ve got to respect his visions, and while it might not always come off, he almost always creates memorable experiences.

That trend is set to continue with Detroit: Become Human, the next video game from the French studio. What was originally the tech demo known as Kara, is now a fully-fledged game and attempts to tell the story of the trials and tribulations of artificial intelligence and its growing place in a fictional society. “I am Kara, I am one of them, this is our story!” ended Quantic Dreams’ debut trailer, and we’re intrigued to see how this story pans out, and E3 2016 seems like the perfect place to find out.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Ubisoft San Francisco | Ubisoft

Rumour has it that Ubisoft San Francisco’s South Park: The Fractured But Whole is set to hog a lot of Ubisoft’s limelight at this year’s E3, and considering the huge critical success that its predecessor was, can you really blame them?

Instead of opting for the Lord of the Rings-style setup in the sequel, Ubisoft San Francisco have decided to go all superhero on our asses, introducing Coon and Friends into the fray. Prepare to be New Kid once again, but this time team up with Mysterion, Toolshed, Human Kite, Mosquito, Mint Berry Crunch and more, to take down that pesky Professor Chaos!

Sure, it might not be Obsidian building the sequel – which is probably our only cause for concern – but the fact that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are involved once again should be all that really matters. What made the first game such a great game was its material, it’s dialogue, its close resemblance to the show, and we’re convinced that’s all that’s needed for a great sequel.

Dishonored 2

Arkane Studios | Bethesda

The first Dishonored was a breath of fresh air. An interesting new IP with a great art-style, some neat ideas and a brilliant execution. Now imagine what Arkane Studios can do with the second one!

Thankfully we don’t have to wait long to find out, oh no no, and there’s a very good chance indeed that Bethesda will make Dishonored 2 their centrepiece at their press conference on Sunday night.  That means that you can expect oodles and oodles of gameplay – if their Fallout 4 announcement last year is anything to go by – and information galore on what could be one of this year’s hottest games. It won’t be a case of Blink and you miss it (geddit?), we’re sure there’ll be enough to feast upon.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Guerrilla Games | Sony

While Horizon: Zero Dawn might not be hitting its originally planned 2016 release window, we won’t have to wait too long for it, with it now being scheduled for a February 2017 release. And remember, folks, it was Nintendo legend, Shigeru Miyamoto that famously once said, “A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”

Regardless of the delay, we’re still incredibly intrigued to see what Guerrilla have up their sleeves when it comes to Horizon at this year’s show. Ever since last year’s E3 unveiling, Horizon has been high on our most anticipated list thanks to its fairly unique post-apocalyptic setting and intriguing hunter-style gameplay. Granted, we’ve seen post-apocalyptic games galore for the last 10 years, but this is one with a difference: it has robotic dinosaurs! 10-year old me would have lost its shit over a game like this on its concept alone!

Persona 5

P Studio | Atlus

The joys of being Editor on this wonderful site is that I get to strongly suggest games that make it on to many of our list features… and by strongly suggest, I stare at everyone with intense eyes until they agree with me. And out of the games out there that I would do this for, there are none more worthy  – aside from Mass Effect – for that kind of treatment than Persona.

Persona 4 was such a wonderful JRPG with beautifully crafted characters, a twisty-turny story and had more charm than a Benedict Cumberbatch and George Clooney offspring. Persona 5 looks to be more of the same, and then some. With a new cast of zany characters, plenty of new innovations when it comes to the dungeon crawling aspect and it’s incredible art-style and funky soundtrack, it’s a game that we’re excited to see more of. Especially now that it’s got a February 14th release in the US next year! Bring it on!

LEGO Dimensions Season 2

TT Games | Warner Bros

If you hadn’t quite gathered, we were big fans of LEGO Dimensions and all that its first 5 waves brought our way last year. Heck, we have a shelf in the office that is devoted entirely to the wonderful mini-figs and their vehicles. I mean, what isn’t there to love about LEGO and the mashing up of so many beloved different franchises. Back To The Future and The Simpsons characters in the same world, for instance, this is why LEGO Dimensions was such a big success in our eyes.

Well, Season 2 looks to be upping the ante, adding 16 (16!!) new franchises to the fray. We’ll be getting Gremlins, Sonic, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Adventure Time, The Goonies, Beetlejuice, Harry Potter, The Powerpuff Girls, Mission Impossible, ET and more! Yes, more! That means that you’ll be able to get Sloth, Mr T, Mogwai and ET all together on one screen, which if I told my 10-year old self that was going to be possible, he’d have nerded the fuck out!

Agents of Mayhem

Volition | Deep Silver

Saints Row was one of last-generation’s hit new franchises, selling millions of copies and delighting open-world fans the world over with its bizarre, over-the-top antics and it’s juvenile sense of humour. That’s no surprise though, considering the development talent behind it.

From the makers of Saints Row, Volition, comes a brand new IP: Agents of Mayhem, a game that pits good against evil in a comic book-style world. Featuring an original storyline and set in an over the top, open-world, you play one of the Agents of Mayhem – thus the name of the game, duh – sent into stop the evil empire, Legion, from taking over the world. Perhaps more interestingly, Volition and Deep Silver have stated that the new IP is, rather bizarrely, actually part of the Saints Row universe, and it’ll share certain story elements, symbolism and design inspiration with aforementioned franchise. Regardless, we’re a big fan of championing new IP and look forward to seeing what Volition have come up with.
