Firewatch Sold 500,000 in its First Month

Campo Santo’s Firewatch sold very well. That much we already knew. However, publisher Panic has revealed the exact numbers: 500,000 in its first month.

“Panic’s metric for Firewatch’s success was probably calibrated a little bit differently than Campo Santo’s,” reads a post by the publisher. “Of course we wanted to make the best possible game we could, but we also had made an investment we really hoped to recoup.

“How’d it go? Firewatch’s budget, while huge for us, was modest for a game of its quality and scope, but we made our investment back in about one day. Firewatch has sold around 500,000 full-price copies in its first month [and] it was even the top PlayStation Store digital download in February.

“Firewatch can be considered a sales success. We’re so grateful. And relieved. But mostly grateful.”

Not played Firewatch yet? You should, it’s ace. A short, pretty, story-led adventure game about a man running away from his problems to take a fire lookout position in the Wyoming wilderness, Firewatch is a fantastic debut. And while some players had a problem with the end, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • I only had a problem with the nudity. You couldn't see those skinny-dipping chicks clearly.
  • I want to play it but money's tight, so waiting on sale. This and Axiom Verge and few other smaller titles are a must buy for me once they are half off=D
  • @2 I'm totally in the same boat as you on Firewatch and watching pennies, but Axiom Verge (imo) is worth the full price of admission (if you can swing it; totally cool if you can't).
  • @#3 I probably could, $15 is not that much in grand scheme of things, but I have plenty to play as it is, so no need to add to that backlog at full price. I didn't have nothing to play right this moment I would most likely pick up Salt and Sanctuary;-)
  • Yeah wait for it to be on sale. Not sure its worth its price... After playing through it, i wanted so much more... More (if then else)consequence for my choices, more story in general... more action in my story, hell, if not action, more quests in the story... Without being spoilery, they could of added more tense, nervous, scary sections with the strange figure u see after the lake. You could run into the girls from the lake again. It just needs some expanding... I think it sold so much because ppl(like me), seen the pics and trailer and thought, hey it looks like a cool survival game in the woods.. Its not a survival game at all. Its a real short story in the woods. It literally is you walking through the woods, with a bosslady in your radio, telling you to go hike here, check this out, go hike here, go check this out. About 5-6 times with a couple semi tense moments thrown in. You form a relationship with her throughout and the end is just a major letdown. I wanted to replay it after, so I started, then realized the walking simulator with the odd emotional radio relationship thrown in to make up for the boringness of the walking sim. It could of been oh so much more... Buy it on sale, not full price. However, Axiom Verge and Salt and Sanctuary are both worth their asking prices...
