Square Enix has announced that Crystal Dynamics' 2013 Tomb Raider reboot has sold more than 8.5 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful game in the franchise's long history. Originally released in March 2013, Tomb Raider also managed to set series sales records for its first day and month on sale.

The sales figures also include Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which released for new-gen consoles in January 2014 with enhanced visuals and all of the additional content.

“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players,” said Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher. “Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”

Tomb Raider is available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, while Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is also out for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Next up, will be Rise of the Tomb Raider, a timed exclusive for Xbox One.

  • Yeah, I wanna hear Square Enix say now how this was a commercial failure for them, even considering how it was a Ps+ title at some point.
  • really enjoyed the story on it but multiplayer was bit of a grind hope when we finally get the next one story be as good and no multiplayer
  • Got a digital copy when I upgraded to a bigger 360 and I thought, aside from the amount of QTEs, it was a fun game. Admittedly, I haven't played any other Tomb Raider games so I can't fairly compare it to the others but it does have me interested in the sequel once it's no longer an exclusive
  • might get to 10 Million with the next installment
  • I didn't really like this one, but it was enjoyable. Wonder if Square Enix still calls it a "commercial failure"
  • I hope there's no multiplayer in the sequel.
  • @4 That's a lot of Xboxes.
  • With the Tomb Raider reboot they expanded the fan base, but with Rise of the Tomb Raider they decided to reduce the fan base by going with Microsoft. Brilliant!
  • A good game for both gens. Multiplayer was a bit of a grind, hope the new one aint got any. Dang chatter box though.
  • How??? I have played better games that have sold less ahwell aleast the next tomb raider is just xbone lol
  • @10: The new Tomb Raider is a timed XB1 exclusive and will be coming to the PS4 about a year after its initial release.
  • They would have sold one more if they didn't add multiplayer trophies to the ps4 version.
  • @#11 No one said it would be a year. Actually no time frame was given YET. But if it doesn't release shortly after XBone, a lot of butthurt people won't buy it or will buy it second hand. It's no secret most of the units from next gen where on PS4 and now by going Xbone only it limits sales even further, so I wouldn't expect to break record of the reboot...
  • It only sold well b.coz ps4 had no games at the time when it was released on ps4 i cldnt care less if it never came to ps4 there was not enough exploring and way to much action tomb raider lost its way years ago lara is still fit tho swooooon lolz
  • Crystal Dynamics ? who cares about them. and besides they said timed exclusive but then came out and M$ said were the ones developing it. so IMo we may never get it at all cause they came right out after SFV announcement on PS4 they were developing it and such. so Tomb Raider is dead too me. almost makes me wish the franchise dies cause of Dynamics stupid decision.
  • I HATE tombs!
  • Announcing this when most of the sales came from Sony consoles, and after they've announced some form of exclusivity deal for the sequel to be on only Xbox consoles (at least for a limited amount of time)... Boneheaded move, Square Enix.
  • I liked the reboot because I never played it on the Ps3, sucks M$ is keeping lara just to compete with drakes, silly how they couldn't create there Own IP to compete with. over all money talks, that's just how it is. anyhow, game it up :)
  • tombs where fun in this. compared to the older ones.
  • @15 MS are not developing it, they are publishing it for X1 and 360. After the timed exclusivity expires Square Enix can publish it for Playstation. I don't see how it's a stupid decision, CD/Square get MS to pay for a timed exclusivity and Square don't need to spend money publishing it for Xbox. There is also competition in the genre on Playstation in the form of Uncharted, there isn't an obvious competitor on Xbox. Besides, when it is released eventually, hopefully any of the bugs found on the Xbox version will have been fixed.
  • @19 gr8 b8 m8 I r8 8/8
  • I hope they're not dumb enough to think they sold 8 million copies because of the multiplayer!
  • It is sad that I won't be playing another Tomb Raider, but I can't support a company that pulled the kind of bs that Crystal Dynamics has. And then to blatantly lie to everyone about why they did it, on top that, they'll be fine without my purchase.
