E3 2013: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Interview - Jean Guesdon Debunks Some Pirate Myths

Dan Webb

There are a lot of commonly held myths surrounding pirates that have derived from movies, books and TV that aren't necessarily true. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is looking to set the record straight, telling a story from the Gold Age of Piracy, based on the actual recorded history rather than the myth.

Continuing with Connor's lineage for ACIV with his grandfather and swashbuckling pirate Edward Kenway, Black Flag is shaping up to be everything you could ask for from a game with pirates. Except there'll be no parrots on shoulders. Damn.

Check out our interview with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's Creative Director Jean Guesdon for the lowdown on the next instalment in the ongoing franchise, as well as some debunking of those aforementioned myths and clichés surrounding pirates. Arr, matey!

  • Can't wait. Would love a CE for the US!
  • @1 when i was in my gamestop here in eastern canada ( i know its not US lol) they had a collectors one for $150 (at least on the ps4) So maybe they will in the US as well. since our games are usually the same. OT: i am super excited for this game. I loved every assassins game since part 1. One of the best IP's in the last 8 or so years by far, in my opinion.
  • @1 & 2 - I really, really wish I could be as excited as both of you are. I loved the AC franchise but AC3 didn't do a lot for me. I was super hyped to play it but found myself halfway through saying, "it will get better in a bit, surely it will get better in a bit". I'm not saying AC3 was a bad game, it was just a tad boring. I'm watching EVERY trailer and gameplay video of AC4 that I can to try and recapture the love, but I can't help but feel a little jaded.
  • #3 everyone gave bad reviews to AC3 because they were so used to Ezio and the game was full of bugs glitches accept Ezio is gone as the main protagonist and enjoy ubisoft milking the series dry
  • @4 This will likely be my last AC game.
  • @3 I felt the exact same way
  • I have it on pre-order for PS4, but the more I look at it the more I think about cancelling it. I can't help but feel that it is just another assassin's creed game with very little to do other than run around some pretty scenery. The other games grew old quickly for me because when I'd done something once, it felt like I'd done it a billion times. I originally saw this iteration as a new swashbuckling direction for the series, a seriously cool pirate adventure; but now I'm just thinking its the same sneak across something high, jump down and stab someone, run away, rinse repeat as the previous games, just in a prettier setting. Not sure if I'm being overly cynical and should wait for the game to judge, or I should cancel the pre-order. Help me decide guys and gals.
  • It looks the same as the rest of them. I cant see much changing with this one. ACII was the only great AC game, the rest are just rinse and repeat. ACIII was beyond terrible. One of the only games I've ever brought and not finished.
  • I swear people put there standards so high for no reason. AC2 was the only great AC game? Are you kidding me? Story wise it was alright but gameplay wise it is incredibly frustrating, dont believe me, try playing it again. The combat system and free-running are annoying as hell. As for you having to do the same climb something high, stab someone, run away over and over, why dont you just try something new? Seriously i never play the game steathly cuz i would be doing the same thing mix it up run in there and shoot the guy in the face. Dont hate the game just cuz you choose to do the same thing over and over.
  • Assasins Greed
  • I really do hope to be able to order a collectors eddition online sometime soon with no game stops around here, such a great series. @10 not really if a series is popular and alot like it what is wrong with giving the fans what they want, I know I can't wait for this one and hopefully alot more games in the series, not to mention i hope the present day stuff brings back you know who somehow in atwist way and that evil bitch gets killed extra hard, because the series can't end until she is dead now and humanity is saved. Just like the series main goal at first was trying to save humanity from being deep fried.
