2K has announced that a new Civilization game is in development, amid a reshuffling of staff at XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns studio Firaxis Games. With Creative Director Jake Solomon departing, former COO Heather Hazen (who has 22 years of industry experience), has been promoted to Studio Head.

Long-serving Firaxis Studio Head Steve Martin (not that one) will also be leaving after 25 years, with Hazen replacing him in the role, as Ed Beach will continues as Creative Director on the new Civilization. “I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio's storied legacy, beginning with the announcement that Firaxis is in development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise,” Hazen commented.

“I’m lucky to be working with some of the best developers in our industry, and we have plans to take the Civilization franchise to exciting new heights for our millions of players around the world,” she added. “In addition, we will continue to support Marvel’s Midnight Suns with post-launch content, and explore new creative projects for our teams.”

Beach has been an key part of development on the Civilization series, having worked on the franchise for over 15 years, most recently leading design on Civilization VI, which has, to date, sold more than 65 million copies. As for Solomon, he'll be leaving behind work on the XCOM games and Marvel's Midnight Suns, after two decades with Firaxis.

“I'm embarking on a new chapter; however, I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to fulfill my dreams at Firaxis Games,” said Solomon. ”I’m thankful to everyone who enjoyed XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and to my development and publishing partners who helped bring those games to life."

There are no details on the next mainline Sid Meier's Civilization game as yet, but, given that previous Civilization titles have come to console, we'd hope that the same will be true of the upcoming new entry. As for a new XCOM, however, forget about it.
