Ys Origin is a JRPG developed and published by Nihon Falcom in 2006 for Microsoft Windows, but has since been released on the PS4 and PS Vita. Ys Origin serves a prequel to the main Ys storyline and follows the story of three different heroes, each with their own unique stories that when played in order reveals greater detail about the story as a whole.

Trophy wise, Ys is a time consuming and semi-difficult Platinum to obtain. The main obstacle that makes this platinum time consuming is that you must complete the game a total of 6 times (3 of these times must be on the hardest difficulty, "Nightmare") not only for certain trophy requirements but to unlock content in the Bonus Shop that is tied to another trophy as well. Nightmare difficulty can indeed be a nightmare, especially since another trophy requires that you complete Boss Rush mode on this difficulty setting. Once you take the time to understand the game's mechanics and learn boss patterns, you will find that the obtaining the Platinum is doable.

Stability Warning: Ys Origin is very prone to crashing and glitching at random times but some of the more common crashes occur while playing Boss Rush mode and when dying repeatedly to bosses while playing in Story Mode. Still, the game can crash even outside of those scenarios so it is important to save whenever you are presented with a save altar.

General Tips:

  • One of the first things you will notice when you start playing Ys, is that you can't store any healing items to use for later use as you can only pick up "Herbs" from defeating enemies that restore health. As a result, one of the first blessings you will want to purchase when starting out is the "Increase effect of herbs" blessing to get more health out of dropped items. Levelling that blessing to max will buff the herbs greatly, something that will come in handy on higher difficulty levels. Additionally, use the crystal that you received at the beginning of the game to your advantage. If you're near death and not fighting a boss, you can warp out of the room since you're given invincibility frames once you choose a location so you won't get hit while you're being transported.

  • Each character has their own unique Burst technique that can be used by pressing twice once you've talked to the appropriate Roo and obtained the ability. You are entirely invincible throughout the Burst animation and even though you receive this power late in the game, it will be near essential for avoiding some bosses attacks in Nightmare Mode's Boss Rush.

  • Default movement speed is rather slow, when you obtain the ability to Dash in the Flooded Prison, configure your settings to "Always Dash Once Able" from the Option menu of the pause screen.

  • Skills are unique to each character but they all share common traits like invincibility and having the ability to break through certain walls or get past certain traps etc. It's important to learn the Skills of each character inside out, especially the skills that offer invincibility frames during the animation. You can learn more about each character's individual skills by going to "Topic -> Manual" from the pause screen.

  • If you're having trouble with a boss or area, levelling up is your best friend. Going up even one level can drastically change how much damage you deal and receive and it helps to be a level above of enemies. You can check the level of an enemy or boss by going to "Topic -> Monster" from the pause screen.

Step 1: Complete the Story with all three characters on Normal Mode or higher

In this step, you will want to work on completing the stories of all three characters while playing on a difficulty on or above Normal. During this step you should focus on getting familiar with the game's mechanics and boss fights, especially the boss fights, you will be fighting them many times throughout your platinum run. It also wouldn't hurt to max out your skills and equipment while collecting all of the Roda fruits, since you ideally want to do that on every playthrough as the location of all of these collectables stay the same regardless of the character you're playing as. You should also go for your "No Death" trophy during any of the three playthroughs on Normal.

At the end of this step, you will have the following trophies:

First one down
Shopping Time
Prison breakout
King of the lava
Creepy
Spike Dodger
A brave warrior
She should have trained more
No Mercy
The Perfect Equipment
Using all the magic
Taking care of the Roos
Nice run
A fighting victory
True heroes never die
Unbelievable
Magically over
Demoniac Victory
Encyclopedist
Three ways of being a hero

Step 2: Complete the Story with all three EX characters on Nightmare Mode

Now that you've gotten a feel for the game and all of its character's, you now need to beat the game on Nightmare mode with all of the EX characters to unlock the corresponding trophy and to unlock some additional content for Shoplifter. EX characters can be purchased from the Bonus Shop once you've purchased all of the available Arena Stages in Arena Mode so refer to Shoplifter for an SP grinding method. Additionally, Nightmare mode can be challenging so look under the walkthrough for The Nightmare is over for tips to see you through it.

At the end of this step, you will have the following trophies:

Hardly a fight
A Hard Success
The Nightmare is over

Step 3: Nightmare Boss Rush + Arena Mode

This is where what you've learned over the course of all of your playthroughs will be put to the test. Arena Mode is easy enough to cheese with the right strategy, but Boss Rush will be the real challenge. You will have to choose a character and defeat all of their bosses in one sitting (you can't pause during a boss) continuously while playing on Nightmare Difficulty. Luckily you can retry against the boss you were facing and don't have to start over but will need to be very familiar with every bosses patterns in order to beat them in Boss Rush. For more information, refer to the walkthrough for You're the Boss.

At the end of this step, you will have the following trophies:

You're the Boss
Arena Master

Step 4: Very Easy Playthrough + Bonus Shop Cleanup

All that's left now is to complete a Very Easy playthrough of the game in order to grind for I've got the power! and Fully blessed. By this point you should have also defeated more than 10,000 enemies but if not, you will definitely obtain it while grinding. Once you've done that, all you need to do is purchase everything in the Bonus Shop in order to unlock the Platinum.

At the end of this step, you will have the following trophies:

Fully blessed
Mass murderer
I've got the power!
Guess who's back
Shoplifter
Top of the Tower

31 trophies ( 15  11  )

  • Obtain all trophies.

Once you have obtained all of the trophies, you will unlock the Platinum. Congratulations saviour of Ys!

  • Finish the game in Nightmare difficulty with any character.

Nightmare difficulty is the hardest difficult mode in the game and cannot be selected from the start. It will only be unlocked once you have cleared the game with all three characters. Here are a few tips you should keep in mind while playing Nightmare mode:

    • In Nightmare mode the amount of SP and EXP you receive from enemies is highly reduced in comparison to other game difficulties and as a result, you will find that purchasing upgrades and levelling up will come very slowly at first. Still, it's important to not be under levelled while playing in this mode. You will know you're under levelled if you're taking too much damage from enemies or bosses.

    • By the time you approach this mode you should have already purchased the "EX" versions of all of the characters from the Bonus Shop. The EX characters really aren't that different from their normal versions, except their Skills are slightly enhanced in various ways. It may not seem like much but enhanced Skills will help you greatly in this mode.

    • On that note, take the time to level up if you find yourself unable to beat a boss or get past an area that seems too difficult. It might take longer but it makes things easier for you in the long run. Obtaining and maxing out your equipment at every available opportunity is also necessary here as well, since equipment greatly increases your defense.

    • In Nightmare mode the attacks of bosses are enhanced. For example: The first boss will create a clone of himself but you will have to fight them both at the same time. All bosses receive some sort of change in their attack pattern like this so keep an eye out.

    • If you are having trouble with any of the bosses in Nightmare mode, I recommend referring to this comprehensive Nightmare Boss Guide, it goes into great detail about boss attacks and patterns and how to counter them with each character: LINK. Credit to Mr Bors for this.

Overall Nightmare difficulty isn't too difficult, because you can grind out level ups if you ever encounter an area or boss that seems impossible but ultimately that's what you will want to do since most boss attacks can kill you in a few hits if you're not properly levelled. After that, it's just a matter of scrutinizing boss patterns so that you can learn how to avoid attacks and defeat the boss as quickly as possible.

Once you beat the game on Nightmare difficulty with any character, the trophy will unlock.

  • Complete Boss Rush in Nightmare difficulty.

Boss Rush can be accessed by going to Time Attack from the Main Menu, and then choosing your character. This is possibly the hardest trophy in the game, if not harder than beating the game on Nightmare difficulty. The issue is that unlike your Story Mode playthrough, you can't grind levels until you're strong enough to take the boss on without getting killed almost immediately. You are given the base equipment from the first boss and get progressively better equipment as you take on later bosses but still die in just a few hits. Boss mastery and understanding of patterns is key here but more so is character knowledge. I personally recommend using Hugo for Boss Rush mode, as I feel that he has the easiest bosses among the three characters and his Shield (Wind) skill leaves room for error against bosses but if you feel more comfortable with another character, then you should consider using them instead. If you're looking for boss strategies to use here, in addition to referring to the Nightmare Boss Guide I linked above, I also recommend checking out this Nightmare Boss Rush Playlist: LINK. If you're having trouble against a specific boss, you can refer to that playlist for advanced strategies to use against them and it can also help to see how others avoid certain attacks. Credit to Annie Mood for the Boss Rush Playlist.

Note: It should be noted that you cannot pause during Boss Rush mode or during any boss fight in the story. If you want to take a break which I would suggest doing if you can't seem to beat a boss, you can idle on the retry screen and put your system into "Rest Mode" from there without losing any of your progress.

  • Complete all 6 levels of Arena Mode in Nightmare difficulty.

Arena Mode can be accessed from the Main Menu once you complete the game. In Arena Mode you fight enemies in waves based off the enemies you fought in the main story but to unlock more stages you need to purchase them from the bonus shop for a set amount of SP. The SP gained in Arena Mode is based off difficulty, if you start on Nightmare mode you'd have enough SP to work your way up and buy the stages as you go. Alternatively you can play on easier mode and grind for SP while becoming familiar with the enemy waves in preparation for your Nightmare run. Beating all of the Arena Stages on Nightmare difficulty isn't very difficult, mostly due to the fact that you level up as you defeat enemies. Since your health is restored upon each level up, you usually don't have to worry about that. Another nice thing is that you can use your Burst freely in this mode and since your Burst replenishes quickly if you have less health, you can run around the Arena waiting for your Burst to recharge and continuously spam it until you defeat all of the waves. I personally recommend using Toal for this mode, as his charged Thunder skills decimates enemies and he has the strongest burst among the three characters. Once you've beaten all six Arena Stages in Nightmare difficulty, the trophy will unlock.

  • Finish the game on any difficulty with the 3 characters.

    GLITCHED

This trophy should come naturally once you complete your first set of playthroughs but many people have experienced the trophy not popping even after they've completed the game with each character. Since you will be doing 2 playthroughs of the game with each character anyway, don't worry if the trophy doesn't pop after your first set of playthroughs. If you complete the second set of Nightmare playthroughs and it still doesn't pop, a common fix is replaying the final boss of a character on a previous save file. Once you've completed the game with all three characters, this trophy will unlock.

  • Purchase everything available in the Bonus Shop.

The Bonus Shop is unlocked once you clear the game once and it is here where you can purchase various additional content, such as the EX characters, Arena Stages and additional characters. Keep in mind that you can't buy everything in the Bonus Shop immediately, there are two items (Arena Stage 7 and Yunica's School Girl Outfit) that must be unlocked first. These items are unlocked once you beat the game three times normally and three times with the EX characters on Nightmare mode. You obtain SP from playing in Arena Mode and the best place to grind for SP is in the fifth Arena stage Blighted Blood using Toal. His charged Thunder skill reaps a great amount of SP from the enemies in this Arena. You will have all of the SP necessary to purchase everything in the Bonus Shop in about 30 minutes to an hour of grinding in this Arena stage. Below is a visual of the grinding strategy:

Once you have purchased everything in the Bonus Shop, this trophy will unlock.

  • Finish the game in Normal, Hard or Nightmare difficulty with any character without dying.

This trophy isn't as daunting as it may come off. Contrary to the trophy description, you can actually die while going for this trophy as it is only nullified when you press "Retry" after dying. An easy workaround is to just constantly save your game and if you die, simply choose "Return to title" and boot up your save. that way Due to this, it's possible to obtain this trophy while playing on Nightmare or Hard without too much difficulty but I would still recommend going for this trophy on Normal. Once you complete the game without dying on Normal difficulty or higher, the trophy will unlock.

  • Finish the game with Yunica in Normal mode or harder.

Yunica is the one of the two characters that you can play as when you first start the game. Yunica is a mid range fighter that attacks with close range weapons like her Axe and Sword. In terms of difficulty, Yunica falls somewhere in the middle of the three playable characters: she has both close range and long range capabilities with her attacks and skills but doesn't dish out that much damage. I would suggest playing Yunica during your second playthrough once you've gotten a feel for the game. Once you complete the game with Yunica while playing on Normal or harder, the trophy will unlock.

  • Finish the game with Hugo in Normal mode or harder.

Hugo is the second of the two playable characters available from the start of the game. Hugo is a long range fighter that specializes in magic and is not ideal for up close combat but long range is where he flourishes and is the distance he wants to remain at. His regular attacks have great range and deal a lot of damage and his Wind Skill gives him a shield that protects him from damage for a set period until it breaks. Given his abilities, I would recommend that you start the game with him as he is very beginner friendly. Once you complete the game with Hugo while playing on Normal or harder, the trophy will unlock.

  • Give a Roda Fruit to all of the Roos in the tower with any character.

Roda Fruit are green fruit found in chests throughout the tower that, when given to Roos, will yield gifts in the form of armor and abilities. There are a total of six Roda Fruit within the tower, none of which are missable. I will list their locations below:

Roda Fruit #1: Floor 5 - In this room, go North East and then east to arrive at a fork. Ignore the Southern stairs and ascend the blocks to the North, then jump West, following the path to a dead-end with a large button. Step on it and you will see a platform on the Eastern side of the room rise, which will allow you access to a chest. Head back East and follow the path up here on the ledge, crossing over to the new platform to find the Roda Fruit.

Roda Fruit #2: Floor 8 - This is the room where you first encounter the turtle enemies underwater, ignore them since you currently don't have the Skill necessary to defeat them. Go all the way west until you reach the next screen, then go down the first gap you see. Now go right and down the next gap. Swim left against the current, drop down and swim right against the current, then drop down once more. Drop down the gap here then drop down two more sections to a chest that contains the Roda Fruit.

Roda Fruit #3: Floor 10 - Once you've obtained the Red Moon Crest proceed East to the next area. In this area head South East to a branching path, then go up the stairs that lead to the West first, following the path to another platform with stairs heading North. Don't go up the stairs though, you should see a symbol on the ground to the right, equip the Mask of Eyes and watch a bridge appear in front of you. Cross over it, then unequip the Mask and take out the enemies here. Once they're gone, jump on the button here to make a platform to the West rise. Drop back down to the lower area and you will be back at the fork but this time, take the Southern stairs. Follow the path then jump up the platform that was revealed to find a chest containing a Roda Fruit.

Roda Fruit #4: Floor 14 - From the save altar, head North to the next area. In this open area smash the urn to the West, then go North West up some blocks. At the fork, go through the doorway on the western wall, there is a chest containing the Roda Fruit.

Roda Fruit #5: Floor 18 - From the save altar, head east to the next area. Continue along this path and you'll come to a fork with some spikes in your way; double-jump up to the upper left from these spikes and step on the button here to make them move. Hop back down and go through them now, stepping on the button at the end of the path here to get the next set of spikes moving. Make your way back through them, then double-jump up and to the right. At the next locked gate, double-jump to the upper-right again and step on the button here, then drop back down and jump on the button on the other side of this gate to the east, allowing you to make your way to the upper-left. After clearing the gate that you just unlocked to the upper-left, double-jump up to the right side and head East to be clear of these gates. You will arrive at another fork; ignore the path to the South East and instead take the path to the North and through a doorway to the next screen. Make your way North East and East, then you will come to yet another fork so go South Wast and East first, smashing the urns and pressing the button at the dead end to cause the platform in the center of the area to drop. Return to the fork and drop down this large hole, then follow the path to a dead-end, where you will have to defeat a group of enhanced Chryolos. Once they're defeated the barriers will be removed, allowing you to open the chest for another Roda Fruit.

Roda Fruit #6: Floor 22 - From the save altar, head North to trigger a cutscene, then continue North up the stairs to the next area where you should need to keep going North. Follow the path until you turn West to the next area. From here, follow the path until you reach a split with paths to the North and East, take the Eastern path first then double-jump and use your Wind magic to make the leap over the gap. Now continue to a dead-end, where you will find a chest containing the last Roda Fruit.

  • Purchase all the blessings with any character.

Blessings can be purchased by going to any save altar and entering the "Accept divine blessing" menu. There are a total of 13 blessings you need to max out, not including armor sets and blessings with multiple levels. It is best to grind out the SP needed for all of the blessings by playing on Very Easy (since it has the highest SP multiplier) and grinding out the last room before the Devil's Throne save altar. To learn more about the SP grinding strategy, refer to I've got the power! Once you purchase all the blessings with any character, the trophy will unlock.

Note: Armor sets do count as blessings but you need to fully upgrade all available armor sets in order to get them to count for the trophy.

  • Fill in all the data entries in the monster journal.

When you defeat an enemy, their stats are recorded in the Journal accessible by going to "Topic -> Monster" from the Pause Menu. By the time you complete one playthrough you will have encountered all of the monsters but each character has their own bosses so you will need to beat the game with all three characters in order to defeat all of the bosses and unlock this trophy.

  • Kill 10.000 ennemies.

Defeated enemies are tracked across all gameplay modes and is cumulative between all the characters. Unfortunately this statistic cannot be seen in game. You will defeat more than 10,000 enemies while trying to obtain the platinum, you will most likely obtain this trophy while working on your Nightmare playthroughs. Once you have defeated 10,000 enemies, this trophy will unlock.

  • Finish the game in Hard difficulty with any character.

    See The Nightmare is over.

  • Reach the maximum level with any character.

The maximum level is level 60, by the time you reach the final boss you will be around level 50. This process is time consuming because there's no way to increase the amount of EXP you receive except for the multiplier that builds as you defeat enemies. You will want to work on this trophy in Very Easy mode because it has the highest EXP multiplier in comparison to other difficulties. The ideal way to grind for this trophy is to play as Toal and fight your way though the final room before you reach the Devil's Throne. This room has the most enemies in it and they are all in close proximity to one another so your multiplier won't run out while you grind here. There is a fruit that replenishes Burst on the South Western side of the room so you can grab it repeatedly whenever you come back in the room to clear out a good portion of the enemies. Using this strategy, you should reach level 60 in about 5 to 6 hours. Once you reach level 60, this trophy will unlock. Below is a visual of the grinding strategy:

  • Buy your first upgrade.

    See Fully Blessed.

  • Upgrade each piece of equipment to the maximum level of any character.

Equipment is upgraded by going to a save altar and paying a certain amount of SP to "bless" or upgrade the armor. In order to unlock this trophy, you must bless all of the available armor sets in the game with any character. Once you have done so, the trophy will unlock.

  • Upgrade every magic attack to the maximum level of any character.

Magic attacks or Skills are upgraded by obtaining colored gems from chests that correspond to specific skills. The chests in which these gems are located are easy to find and not missable even if you beat the game, once you upgrade all of your Skills to their max levels the trophy will unlock.

  • Finish the game on Easy difficulty with any character.

    See The Nightmare is over.

  • Finish the game on Very Easy difficulty with any character.

    See The Nightmare is over.

Secret trophies

  • Finish the game with Toal in Normal mode or harder.

Toal is the third playable character, unlocked once you complete the game with both Yunica and Hugo. He is described as an "experts only" character and in some regards this is true. While he has the strongest damage output of the three characters, he is also a short ranged fighter with limited long range abilities outside of his Burst attack. Since you have to get close to deal damage, you're at greater risk of getting attacked by an enemy or boss. If you're not familiar with enemy attacks or boss patterns it can be difficult, especially since Toal has some of the harder bosses like Shion and Galeon. It can especially be difficult in Nightare mode, where just a few hits can mean death. Once you have beaten the game with Toal on Normal or higher, the trophy will unlock.

  • Beat Velagunder "The Gangly Beast".

Velagunder is one of the first bosses in the game is pretty easy to beat. When the fight starts, Velagunder will spit out a mass of green bubbles. You can either dodge them as they come or avoid them entirely by standing next to Velagunder's head, thus allowing you to attack him freely. His laser attack can be run from or you can stand by his head again to make him halt the laser but watch out though, because when he uses the laser, he stomps his arms, thus causing damage if you're by his head so jump to avoid it and giving you more time to attack. Once you deal enough damage to his head, he will reveal his brain, climb up his arms to deal damage to the brain. Once you defeat Velagunder, this trophy will unlock.

  • Beat Nygtilger The Pestilent Arthropod".

Nygtilger is a boss encountered while in the Flooded Prisons and is a bit more difficult to beat than the last boss. When the fight starts, run in circles dodging lightning until Nygtilger descends. When he does, attack the rods on his back to deal damage but as you destroy the rods, he will start spitting out orbs where the rods were that deal poison damage to you. They go off like bombs but you can knock them away with your regular attacks and Skills. Once you've destroyed all of the rods, his head will start glowing: attack his head to defeat him for good. Once you've defeated Nygtilger, the trophy will unlock.

  • Beat Gelaldy "The Murderous Construct".

Gelaldy is the boss encountered in Guilty Fire and he has a very simple pattern. He has three main attacks:

    1: Thrusting his fist forward
    2: A circular spin slash
3: Summoning lightning in a pattern.

You can avoid his straight punch by running in any direction along the inner most circle, while his circular spin can be avoided by jumping straight up. When he summons some lighting, you can walk around the arena to avoid it. When he misses his punches, you have to attack his arms but once you destroy both of them, he will plunge his head into the ground, thus allowing you to attack the horn on his head and deal damage. Once you defeat Gelaldy, you will unlock this trophy.

  • Beat Khonsclard "The Maneating Creeper".

Khonsclard is a boss encountered in the Silent Sands area and on harder difficulties, he can be a nightmare. When the fight starts, you will need to destroy eyes that he has on the ground in order to attack his core, if you leave the eye there long enough it will start healing him. The more eyes he has on the field, the faster his health will regenerate but it can be difficult attacking the eyes since Khonslcard will be constantly throwing projectiles at you. You can damage Khonsclard's body and he will stop moving for a set period of time, allowing you to take out his eyes freely. Once you've defeated Khonsclard, this trophy will unlock.

  • Beat Pictimos "The Grim Mantid".

Pictimos is a boss encountered in the Blighted Blood area and he is regarded as one of the more annoying bosses. When the fight starts, he will jump back and slam the ground, pushing you away and will then throw two types of disc based projectiles i.e. horizontal and vertical discs which you will have to jump over or run past respectively. You can tell the type of disc by the way he moves his claws. Eventually he will push you back again and start launching missiles, that's your opening to attack him. Keep in mind that the missiles aren't instant, since they can't hit you while they're glowing purple. Once he gets around half health, he will summon enemies and this is where things get a bit troublesome. The enemies themselves are pretty harmless since they don't attack very often but when you defeat Pictimos, he can revive himself if any enemies are still alive. He won't get full health back but he can revive himself almost infinitely so long as there are enemies out, though the enemies will get weaker with each revive. That being said, prepare for a long battle.

  • Beat Kishgal "The Peerless".

Kishgal is a boss encountered in one of the last areas in the game, is among the hardest bosses to beat. He attacks primarily by using ice pillars, shooting ice projectiles and using his axe. It's vital to maintain distance from him when you can and to attack with a long range projectile when you have the opportunity. When he summons two ice dragons, you use your Wind skill to avoid them. Once you've defeated Kishgal, the trophy will unlock.

  • Beat Epona “The resolute”.

Epona is a boss encountered in one of the last areas in the games and is fairly difficult to beat. She is a very mobile opponent and will jump and throw daggers constantly throughout the fight. You need to keep moving and jumping to avoid them but when she flashes and performs a fiery charge, attack whilst she's recovering.

  • Beat Zava with Yogleks & Omulgun "The Merciless".

Zava is a boss encountered in the Mirror area and is easy enough to defeat. When the fight starts she'll be hovering in the air above you, while her familiars will try to attack you from the ground. Use a mid-air skill to attack her, when you've done enough damage she'll fall to the ground and fuse with one of her familiars. From that point you'll have to attack the familiar she fused with until the familiar spits her out, from there you can attack her until she repeats the process. If you see both of her familiars disappear and she is summoning a mass of energy in the center of the room, be prepared to run. Once you've defeated Zava and her familiars, the trophy will unlock.

  • Beat Toal Fact "The Believer".

Toal Fact is the second to last boss in Hugo's story mode and is quite tough. You want to have your shield up at all times and always stay on the move until he does either a fire tornado attack or Thunder skill attack, as those moments are when he will pause for a moment allowing you to attack him. If he's preparing to do his Burst, activate your own to invulnerability through his. Once you defeat Toal, the trophy will unlock.

  • Unlock Adol.

Adol is the protagonist of previous Ys titles and can be purchased in the Bonus Shop for 100,000 SP. Even though he has two versions (Felghana and Napishtim) you only need to purchase the first version in order to unlock this trophy.
