Introduction

Yesterday: Origins is a point and click adventure game developed by Spanish developer Pendulo Studios, best known for the Runaway series of adventure games. It is a sequel to Yesterday, released in 2012. Knowledge of the previous game is helpful, but not necessary to enjoy this one.

You play as John Yesterday, a man who gained immortality in a dark ritual during the Spanish Inquisition. He has one problem – every time he dies, he loses his memory. Gameplay shifts between John in modern times and various points in his history. You will also play as his girlfriend Pauline, a newly-created immortal. The two work together in search of the lost ritual John underwent all those years ago in hopes of recreating it, allowing John to keep his memories.

I have written a walkthrough HERE to help you out. As there has been no confirmation as to what exactly constitutes a hotspot in the game (i.e. if all dialogue is needed; sometimes it seems to be and sometimes it doesn't), it may have some unnecessary steps. But following it will get you all the trophies.

A note on chapter select: There is no chapter select in the main menu. Instead, once you're in the game, pause it and choose “load game”. You will be able to select scenes you've already cleared on the save file you're on. This is useful for the missable trophies, as you are not able to make manual saves in this game. In this guide and my walkthrough I reference chapters – these are marked by distinct character and story changes, not by any sort of official chapter break-up.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Play through the game, interacting with all hotspots, without skipping cinematics

Simply play through the game. Make sure to interact with everything for the hotspots trophies. As of the writing of this guide, there is no clear consensus as to what counts for this trophy and what doesn't. Obviously looking at everything on each screen is a given, but also things in your inventory. Also running through all dialogue options seems to count (sometimes), so you will want to exhaust all dialogue as well.

Do not skip any cinematics, or you will void a trophy and need to do another entire playthrough. You can safely skip through dialogue if you wish.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Filius diaboli
The Legacy of Hyperborea
The Old Man and the Newborn
The Usual Suspects
Occult Knowledge
The Boy Who Lived
New York, New York
The Catacombs
I Can See Everything
This Is Not the End

And if you interacted with all hotspots:

Dungeon Master
Know Your Place
Mystery at the Abbey
Small Apple
Grotesque
Master of the Castle
Lord of the Underworld
Professional Knowledge
Ship Captain
Tu Casa es Mi Casa

Step 2: Speedrun

If you followed my walkthrough and skipped through the dialogue, you may have unlocked this during your first playthrough. If not, you will need to start a new game and play through again. Without needing to worry about going through most of the dialogue, skipping cutscenes, or interacting with the hotspots, this should take a little over two hours. The trophy requires you to finish the game in a little over four hours, so you have plenty of time.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Run, Immortal, Run

Step 3: Cleanup

Now is the time to use chapter select to clean up any miscellaneous trophies you may have missed. You may have obtained some of these during your initial playthrough, or you will have obtained all of them while following my walkthrough. I have listed these trophies in order of when in the game they can be obtained, to help you find the right scene in chapter select.

By the end of this step, you will have earned:

Last Call
Bedroom Optimization
God of Thunder
In a Jiffy
Shopping Optimization
The Redhead's Melody
Obsession
Old Friend
The ABC Saints
Meet the Gang
Marblelous
Stupid Questions
Let There Be Light
Human Calculator

And finally... Triskel ! Congratulations!

37 trophies ( 17  16  )

  • You've achieved supreme knowledge.

My name is John Yesterday. Yours too. You are more than 500 years old.

  • Escape the Inquisition.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy at the end of the prologue chapter after speaking with Gines.

  • Find a book with your favorite symbol on its cover.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy at the end of your first visit to the Baxter Mansion.

  • Unveil Santa Brígida's hidden secrets.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy when Yago finally enters the secret library at the end of his chapter.

  • Meet the last living member of a certain Vatican order.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy soon after The Boy Who Lived.

  • Save the life of the first member of a certain Vatican order.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy at the end of Vulcan's portion of the game.

  • Emerge alive from the Parisian City of the Dead.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy after John explores the catacombs of Paris.

  • Finish the game.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will unlock this trophy at the beginning of the credits.

  • Play the game from beginning to end as if you didn't know that you can skip cinematics.

In order to skip cutscenes, you will have to press to bring up the option to skip, and again to confirm the skip. If you accidentally bring up the option to skip, you will still be okay, but skipping any cutscene will void this trophy.

You can safely press to speed up all non-cutscene dialogue.

If you didn't skip any cutscenes, this trophy will unlock at the beginning of the credits. There is a final cutscene after the credits, but you do not need to watch it for this trophy.

  • Who said speedrunning is not fit for point'n'clickers? Shall we set the mark at 250 minutes?

You may very well do this during your first playthrough (I did, and I was writing a walkthrough while doing it), but odds are you'll have to do a second playthrough. Skipping cutscenes and doing the minimum to get through the game will take around two hours, so you'll have plenty of time (you need to finish the game in just over four hours).

  • Prove you're a black magic aficionado by trying to cook a typical witch recipe.

In the prologue chapter with Miguel, you will come into possession of a demon toad. After you free yourself from the shackles, walk over to the cauldron and use the toad with it to unlock this trophy.

  • Ask the waiter for a drink. I mean, the jailer.

In the prologue chapter with Miguel, you will come into possession of a mug. If you look out of your cell you will notice some wine barrels. Use the mug with these barrels to unlock this trophy.

  • Solve all puzzles in Pauline and John's flat swapping character a maximum of 2 times.

When you first take control of John in chapter two, pick up the diary and the token from the bedside table before watching the video on your cell phone. You will then be switched to Pauline. Finish out the area with her. The trophy will unlock during the loading screen as you travel to the workshop.

  • Insist on Boris parking the van until you find an alternate solution.

When you arrive at the workshop, you will ultimately need to talk to Boris as both Pauline (to get the nylon hammer) and John (to get the ink cartridge).

As Pauline, talk to Boris and choose the “van” option in conversation. Later, when you switch to John, choose the “van” option and keep choosing it until the trophy unlocks (about 5-6 times).

  • Solve all puzzles in the antique shop swapping character a maximum of 5 times.

You will start out in the antique shop as Pauline. During your first run as her, you will need to:

Get the nylon hammer from Boris
    Get the camera
Try to take pictures of the Nio statue
Tell John that you're missing an SD card

At this point, you will want to switch to John. As John, you will need to:

    Get the SD card
Get the printer cartridge from Boris
Get the sigil and pipe from antique shop
Look at the cross in the antique shop back room
Give sigil, pipe, and SD card to Pauline
    Tell Pauline about the cross

At this point, you will want to switch to Pauline. As Pauline, you will need to:

Take pictures of the Nio statue
Paint and finish the pipe with the sigil (using art supplies found on the workbench)
Find the documents in the Nio statue (using information from the cross as well as the picture on the workbench)
Give the pipe, documents, and SD card to John

At this point, you will want to switch to John. As John, you will need to:

    Giftwrap the pipe

I have covered all of these things in greater detail in my walkthrough.

  • Mistake a Japanese carving for a Viking god.

In Pauline's workshop, you will find a hammer on the workbench. With the hammer in your inventory, look at the Nio statue. There is a hotspot on its hand; use the hammer with this hotspot to unlock this trophy.

  • A ghost melody haunts you both at the shop and Baxter's mansion.

While playing as John in the back room of the antique shop, look at the stuff in the middle of the room (where you get the gift box). Among these items is a phonograph. Play the phonograph for a little cutscene about a mysterious redheaded woman. Later in the chapter, play the piano in Baxter's mansion and John will play the same melody and unlock this trophy.

  • Get Gines to tell you something about your very first days of life.

While playing as Yago in the monastery, you will have the option to talk to Gines in his office. Choose “past” and “father”. You can do this at any point before recovering the stolen E blocks.

  • Go through all the possible suspects of a crime with the victim.

While playing as Yago in the monastery, you will have the option to talk to Ezequiel in his workshop about the theft of his letters. Choose “the thief” and run through all the options under that category (more will appear after you clear some) to unlock this trophy. This can be done at any point before catching the thief.

  • Try to get in touch with that girl from the plane.

As John in the hotel room in New York, find and retrieve Amanda's business card from the vent underneath your window. Looking at the card will get you her number. You will need to:

Call Amanda from hotel room phone
Call Amanda from the cell phone in your inventory
Use Amanda's card with the cell phone in your inventory (to do an internet search on her)

  • Sometimes you really wish he were here, huh?

While playing as John in his New York hotel room, you will come into possession of a puzzle tube. Before entering the correct password (GINES), enter HENRY (this is a reference to the first game).

  • Worship the saints in a certain Scottish church without any kind of favoritism.

While playing as Vulcan in the church, you will notice two sets of three saints on the walls flanking the cross. You need to look at them in alphabetical order. There are no markings to tell you their names; it's a matter of trial and error. The order is as follows:

Right side – left statue (Constantine)
Right side – middle statue (Donivalde)
Left side – middle statue (Ethernan)
Right side – right statue (Fergus)
Left side – left statue (Fillan)
Right side – right statue (Rognvald)

  • The Order of the Flesh is made up of a bunch of interesting people, isn't it?

While playing as Vulcan, you will eventually find yourself in the dungeons of the Order of the Flesh. On the right side of the well is a staircase flanked by two statues. This is the hotspot you want to keep looking at to learn about the Order's members. Keep looking until the dialogue starts to repeat – about six or seven times.

  • Master trickery using a maximum of 2 marbles.

While playing as Vulcan, you will eventually find yourself in Gines' workshop. You will find the marbles in a bucket in the middle of the room. You must use one marble in the bucket hanging from the ceiling to unlock the option to use it as a distraction. Before using the second marble, make sure you have the crossbow, bolts, and thread in your inventory.

Use the thread with the bolt, then grab a second marble and use the bolt on the falconry glove (your main trickery objective) near Gines. When prompted, choose the crossbow, then “distraction”. You will obtain both the glove and this trophy.

  • The catacombs are a much brighter place thanks to you.

While playing as John in the catacombs, there are four torches and one set of candles you need to light (the one you need to light for story progression does not count). All four torches are in the room with the well – two on each side, flanking the doors. The candles are in the final room of the catacombs, on the slab. Boris will lend you a lighter to use on them.

  • Because some questions just have to be asked.

While playing in the catacombs as John, your guide Mole will give you a laser pointer to call her if she's needed. Summon her, talk to her, and choose “catacombs” then “touristic guide” and exhaust all the options in that category.

  • Get 9 different estimates for your plane tickets to London.

Glitched; Patch 1.03 fixes this issue.

While playing as Pauline in Amsterdam, you must negotiate prices with Markus. You must do the following:

Pick any price – pick any fraction – pick any tax
Do not agree to the price – you will be able to name the tax again.
Run through the remaining taxes – you will have heard three different prices.
Agree to the third price, and finish the conversation.
Exit the room and use the tablet to take a picture of the tower in the background to trigger the game's autosave.
Load this chapter from the menu and repeat the steps above, choosing a different starting price.
Repeat once more for the trophy.

  • Interact with all hotspots and items inside the Inquisition dungeons.

Hotspots include any points on screen you can interact with, but also seems to refer to things in your inventory and may also include dialogue options. There seems to be some margin of error for this built into the game, as I sometimes unlocked the trophy before finishing each chapter, even though I still had some hotspots left to interact with. I have covered all of these in my walkthrough.

  • Interact with all hotspots and items at Pauline and John's flat.

  • Interact with all hotspots and items at the antique shop.

This is a two-part trophy. You must interact with all hotspots and items during your first trip to the antique shop as well as during Pauline's research session at the antique shop computer near the end of the game (even though you won't move around).

  • Show your appreciation for the less charming creatures of Saint Fergus (Ursus aside).

While playing as Vulcan, look at the two gargoyles in the entryway of the church. Each gargoyle has three symbols and a face to look at. Once you've interacted with all eight hotspots, the trophy will unlock.

You will unlock this naturally while making progress towards Master of the Castle.
