Introduction:

Whitetail Challenge is a first-person hunting/survival game developed and published by PSR Outdoors. The main objective of the game is to progress through four levels to harvest the legendary buck, which is located in the fifth and final level, Alpine Forest.

In order to gain access to the next hunting level, you must first complete one of the following criteria in the current level: Either harvest a single buck or survive the remainder of the first day, full night and the following day. The former can be a rather daunting (or lucky) task as buck spawns are random and the game's mechanics are not very friendly when trying to shoot anything. The latter is probably an easier option on most levels but comes with its own challenges. The first being hunger, which causes your health to constantly decline over the course of the hunt. The only way to counteract this is to consume rations or harvest a doe. The other challenge comes from the coyotes that spawn during the night. These creatures, for some reason or another, are very lethargic in the game and can easily be taken out with one shot from your weapon. If you happen to miss, then their attacks are easily avoided by strafing out of the way.

I have done my best to list all of the pertinent locations of the provisions (i.e.: buck tags, flashlight, rations, ammo crates and medical kits) to make your experience with this game as painless as possible. Keep in mind that you are only equipped with a compass so you may need to pan around a little to pinpoint some of the locations.

Good luck and try to enjoy this rather short hunting experience!

Controls:

Your in-game controls are limited to (and cannot be changed from) the following:

  • - Walk
  • - View
  • - Toggles your flashlight on/off
  • - Back / exit the hunt
  • - Select / confirm
  • - Select provisions
  • - Fire.
  • - Toggle aim.

A few things that should be noted:

  • There is no way to pause the game so be aware of that come nightfall when the coyotes spawn.
  • You must be standing still in order to aim.
  • You will likely have to lead your shots as there seems to be a slight delay from when you fire to when the shot actually hits (thanks to Gage for the advice).
  • All trees, bushes and shrubbery have collision detection so if you try to fire through them at a buck, then you will just be wasting ammo.
  • Walking with will create footsteps; however, moving the stick ever so slightly in any direction will cause you to move very slowly and without sound. Use this to your advantage!
  • Due to a very narrow field of vision, it may seem like you are turning with the very slowly. You are!

Walkthrough:

Step 1: Complete the first level, Pine Barrens

During this step you will familiarize yourself with the game's hunting and survival dynamics. Start by collecting the tags (this must be done first on all levels or the game will prevent you from shooting a buck) and flashlight, which are located in front of the cabin. From there, either try to track down and harvest a buck or wait out the "24-hour clock" in order to unlock the second level, Cypress Swamp.
In this step you will earn:

  • 1st buck tag found
  • 1st ammo found
  • 1st rations found
  • 1st medicine kit found
  • 1st flashlight found
  • access to Cypress Swamp level

Step 2: Complete the three subsequent levels: Cypress Swamp, Brushlands and Winter Woods

Using the same basic principles from the first level, continue through the next three until you have unlocked the fifth and final level, Alpine Forest. In this step you will earn:

  • access to Bushlands level
  • access to Winter Woods level
  • access to Alpine Forest level

Note: I have tried to list all of the locations for the rations in each of the levels to make surviving the 24-hour duration manageable; however, it is always a good idea to try to harvest a doe in order to replenish your health, should you need it. As you are only given a compass on the HUD, please only use these directions as rough estimates.

Step 3: Gain access to the final level, Alpine Forest and harvest the legendary buck

Now that you have access to the last level, your primary goal will be to harvest the legendary buck. There is nothing that distinguishes this buck from any of the others so just keep harvesting and restarting the level until the trophy unlocks. In this step you will earn:

  • harvest The Legendary Buck
  • discover cave

Step 4: Cleanup - earn any remaining trophies

You will likely not need this last step but if you happen to have missed any of the harvest trophies, simply load any of the levels with your weapon of choice and track down your missing animal(s):

  • 2nd buck harvest
  • 1st buck harvest- AR-15
  • 1st doe harvest- AR-15
  • 1st coyote harvest- AR-15
  • 1st buck harvest- shotgun
  • 1st doe harvest- shotgun
  • 1st coyote harvest- shotgun

  • awarded for harvesting the legendary buck- Alpine level

Once you have successfully unlocked the fifth and final level, Alpine Forest, your main objective will be to harvest the legendary buck. There is nothing that distinguishes this buck from any of the others so just keep harvesting and restarting the level until the trophy unlocks.

I found it easiest to head directly to the barn to pick up the tags, then ever so softly (to prevent the footstep noises) walk towards the cave/campsite keeping an eye open for any movement. The majority of the bucks that spawned for me did so in this general area.

Alternatively, you may find the following tactic more useful (credit to Gage for this):

Something I ended up doing for the fifth level, instead of slow walking to the campfire, I basically just ran over to the campfire and stood by the one tree near it and hung out there waiting for a deer to come by. I tried a couple times wandering around the level and ended up never seeing a deer but waiting around the campfire I had one show up on the second day all three times I did it.

Should you not be able to harvest a buck before nightfall, the following locations will come in handy:

Barn (North-Northwest of spawn location, far side of the map)

    • Buck tags: On a crate right in front of the barn.
    • Flashlight: On a crate right in front of the barn.
    • Ammo crate: On the ground next to the flashlight.
    • Medicine: On the ground just North of the ammo crate.
    • Rations: On the ground to the East side of the barn.

Cave (Entrance 1 is North-Northeast of spawn location, along edge of map. Entrance 2 is East-Southeast from the campsite, along the edge of the map. Both should be visible at night as torches are lit inside).

    • Ammo crate: On the ground just South of the fire.
    • Rations: On a crate next to the ammo.
    • Medicine: On a crate just North of the fire.

Campsite - tent and fire (North a short distance from the spawn location)

    • Ammo crate: On the ground Northeast of the tent.
    • Rations: On the ground next to the fire.
    • Medicine: On a crate next of the fire.

  • awarded for 24 hour survival in the Winter Woods

You can unlock the fifth and final level, Alpine Forest, two different ways: Either by harvesting a buck in Winter Woods or by waiting out the clock until the following evening. Some of the prominent locations to assist in your hunt (or wait) are listed below:

Spawn location 1 - Noted by the cornfield you will see if you start to turn clockwise.
Spawn location 2 - Noted by the snow-filled valley you are looking down and lack of cornfield.

Campsite - tent and fire (Northeast from spawn location 1, through the first cornfield)

    • Flashlight: On a crate just North of the tent.
    • Medicine: On the ground just North of the flashlight.
    • Ammo crate: On the ground behind the tent.
    • Rations: On the ground just South of he tent.

Barn (West from spawn location 2; North side of the second cornfield)

    • Buck tags: On a crate just East of the barn.
    • Ammo crate: On the ground just West of the barn.
    • Medicine: On a crate just North of the barn.
    • Rations: On the ground just Northwest of the medicine.

    Miscellaneous provisions

    • Rations: Head West-Southwest from the campsite to the top of a snow-covered hill. It is on the ground next to a tree and dried bush.
    • Rations: From the previous location, head North-Northwest a short distance. It is on the ground between a large patch of grass and a tree.
    • Ammo crate: Head West-Northwest from the campsite to a snow-covered hill. It is on the ground at the crest of the hill.
  • awarded for 24 hour survival in the Brushlands

You can unlock the fourth level, Winter Woods, two different ways: Either by harvesting a buck in Brushlands or by waiting out the clock until the following evening. Some of the prominent locations to assist in your hunt (or wait) are listed below:

Cabin - notable smoke billowing from the chimney (Southwest a short distance from one spawn location but restart if you don't see it)

    • Buck tags: On a crate in front of the cabin.
    • Flashlight: On a crate in front of the cabin.
    • Medicine: On the ground just South of the cabin.
    • Ammo crate: On the ground near the rear of the cabin.
    • Rations: On the ground just to the North of the cabin.

Game feeder 1 (Southeast corner of the map, South-Southeast from the cabin)

    • Rations: On the ground just to the Southwest of the feeder.
    • Ammo crate: On the ground just Southeast of the feeder.
    • Medicine: On the ground just Northeast of the feeder.

    • Ammo crate: On the ground just West of the feeder.
  • awarded for 24 hour survival in the Cypress Swamp

You can unlock the third level, Brushlands, two different ways: Either by harvesting a buck in Cypress Swamp,or by waiting out the clock until the following evening. Some of the prominent locations to assist in your hunt (or wait) are listed below:

Campsite - tent and fire (spawn location)

    • Buck tags: On a crate next to the tent.
    • Rations: On a crate between the fire and the tent.
    • Ammo crate: On the ground just behind the tent.

    • Medicine: On the ground just South of the rations.

    Small island (South of fire)

    • Medicine: On the ground at the crest of the hill.
    • Rations: On the ground next to the medicine.

Barn (spawn location, Southwest from fire, across the water)

    • Flashlight: On a crate in front of the barn.
    • Medicine: On a crate next to the flashlight.
  • awarded for 24 hour survival in the Pine Barrens

You can unlock the second level, Cypress Swamp, two different ways: Either by harvesting a buck in Pine Barrens or by waiting out the clock until the following evening. Some of the prominent locations to assist in your hunt (or wait) are listed below:

Cabin (spawn location, South of fire)

    • Buck tags: On a crate in front of the cabin.
    • Flashlight: On a crate just to the side of the cabin.
    • Medicine: On the ground right behind the cabin.

    • Rations: Just North of the Northwest corner of the cornfield, between two logs.
  • second buck harvest, medium buck, any weapon

This trophy will pop once you have harvested your second buck. Although it is not clearly stated in the description, my trophy did not pop until I had harvested my second buck with the same rifle (i.e. the third buck overall).

  • awarded for your first buck harvest with the AR-15

Once you have selected the level you wish to hunt, be sure to choose the AR-15 as your weapon from the load-out screen. At the start of the hunt, make sure your first action is to pick up the buck tags (locations noted previously). If you fail to do so the game will prevent you from shooting any bucks you run across. Once you have spotted and shot your first buck, you will have to approach it and press when prompted to harvest it. Note: The buck spawns tend to be random so you may need to wander (or wait) for some time before you are able to find one.

Personal level preference for me was Alpine Forest, as the only deer that ever spawned for me were bucks.

  • awarded for your first doe harvest with the AR-15

Once you have selected the level you wish to hunt, be sure to choose the AR-15 as your weapon from the load-out screen. Although it is not required to harvest a doe, it is a good practice to pick up the buck tags prior to setting out just in case you do come across a buck. Once you have spotted and shot your first doe you can simply walk up to it and it will automatically be harvested. Note: The doe spawns tend to be random so you may need to wander (or wait) for some time before you are able to find one.

Personal level preference for me was Winter Woods, as does were popping up all over the place for me.

  • awarded for your first coyote harvest with the AR-15

Be sure to choose the AR-15 as you weapon from the load-out screen. Once the level begins you will need to wait for nightfall, as that is when the coyotes will spawn. It is best to keep your flashlight on and be on the lookout for their glowing green eyes. You will know a coyote is approaching by the sound of their footsteps and noticeable controller vibration (should you have that enabled).

One shot is all it takes to put a coyote down; however, if you happen to miss, then their attacks are slow and easily dodged by strafing out of their path.

  • awarded for your first buck harvest with the shotgun

Refer to 1st buck harvest- AR-15 but choose the shotgun prior to starting the hunt.

  • awarded for your first doe harvest with the shotgun

Refer to 1st buck harvest- AR-15 but choose the shotgun prior to starting the hunt.

  • awarded for your first coyote harvest with the shotgun

Refer to 1st buck harvest- AR-15 but choose the shotgun prior to starting the hunt.

  • discover cave system in Alpine level

In order to unlock the Alpine Forest level, you will have to either harvest a buck or survive the 24-hour duration in Winter Woods.

Once successfully unlocked, you will want to turn and head North-Northeast from the spawn location, along the edge of the map. You will soon encounter one of the entrances to the cave. Inside you will find an ammo crate, rations, and medicine. If you decide to wait until nightfall, both entrances will be slightly illuminated from the torches mounted just inside them.

  • one buck tag is present in each level

The first set of buck tags you will encounter are located in Pine Barrens. They are on a crate next to the front door of the cabin. The trophy will pop shortly after coming in contact with the crate or pressing when prompted. You must pick up the tags prior to attempting to shoot a buck!

If you spawned next to the fire, simply head south over the knoll until you are able to spot the cabin.

  • three ammo crates are present in each level

The first ammo crates you will encounter are located in Pine Barrens. The easiest one to find is located a short distance behind the cabin (West-Southwest direction). If you spawned next to the fire, either head south over the knoll to the cabin or Southeast to the Northwest corner of the cornfield. Whether you need ammo or not, the trophy will pop shortly after coming in contact with the crate or pressing when prompted.

  • multiple rations are present in each level

The first rations you will encounter are located in Pine Barrens. Your spawn location will dictate which ones are easiest to find. If you spawned at the cabin, they are located to its rear (west, just past the medicine). If you spawned at the fire, they are just north of it a short distance. Whether you need the rations or not, the trophy will pop shortly after coming in contact with them or pressing when prompted.

  • multiple medkits are present in each level

The first medkits you will encounter are located in Pine Barrens. Your spawn location will dictate which ones are easiest to find. If you spawned at the cabin, one is located to its rear on the ground next to a log. If you spawned at the fire, it is located nearby on a crate. Whether you need the rations or not, the trophy will pop shortly after coming in contact with them or pressing when prompted.

  • one flahlight is present in each level

The first flashlight you will encounter is located in Pine Barrens. It is on a crate next to the front corner of the cabin. The trophy will pop shortly after coming in contact with the crate or pressing when prompted.
